Sol Mobil
Solar powered vehicles are our thing. We set out in 2018 to provide the highest quality electric vehicles in the world.
All vehicles can be electric, and all electric vehicles can be solar powered. Join the rEvolution today at www.sol-mobil.com.
If you follow this man's advice , then you can afford that next ebike no problem 😉
Keep the receipt 🧾
And just like that, 3 more bright young adventurers have stepped into the wild n crazy world of the Sun Trip Organization. Who needs the grid when you've already got one mounted to the top of your electric bicycle ?!?! Why would you want to stay home when the world has so much for you to behold? There truly is no corner of the world you can't see from a solar vehicle, and in fact, I'd argue they're even better for sightseeing than any assoline powered vehicle - you won't scare the animals away! Just ask Megan and Polo from .journey - they pulled a and hitchiked sailboats all the way here, and only after circling Europe on regular bikes !!! If that doesn't qualify them for this next adventure, then I don't know what would! Follow us for more details of this legendary adventure ! If you live in California, ad are interested in meeting up along the way, then please send a message! They will be departing from Los Angeles this weekend before arriving in San Francisco the following week. Then after that, it's onwards towards New York City!!! Thanks! .trip.california
Down in helping a customer install a new motor drive unit. The guy loves driving his ELF, but was about to replace it, since the electric motor system had quit working for no good reason.
Would you just look at those custom machined sliding dropouts. These are v2, in testing phase at this point. V3 will be made available online at some point in the future after we're finished with testing.
We all take horizontal, 'normal' type dropouts for granted, and we shouldn't, guyz 😂. Adding these new dropouts to ELFs and PEBLs makes tire changes & other service (chain, brakes, etc) much, much easier. It also reduces chain noises, and makes things much more reliable.
🥰
Did you know that veterans from the , in the area, can qualify for a special advanced mobility program through the Asheville VA Hospital? This program works to help disabled veterans restore their personal mobility through providing the appropriate bike, usually a recumbent trike.
Think about it for a sec ... older people ... riding recumbent trikes ... asheville ... yep, you're going to want a serious motor on that thing, and some gnar suspension as well ;) ... it's no coincidence that
was chosen again. With a choice between an drive system, or a hub motor, you're really sitting up at the top of the hill when you choose to sit on a Stein Trike
We got ourselves a brand new work truck. Only 40 years old. Barely has any miles on it 😂 . We like our trucks about as slow, low, and bangen as our solar powered bikes.
Apparently, you can fit 3 ELFs in one of these lil ole S10's if you know what you're doing 😉. Try to guess where we are going this time!
Bamboo is 4x stronger than wood. It has a similar strength-to-weight ratio as aluminum ... and yet, somehow, still has a superior fatigue cycle, vibration dampening properties, and eco credentials compared to any other modern frame building material (including steel, aluminum, and carbon/kevlar).
I'm not exactly talking just bikes anymore. We think this school of thought is absolutely applicable in automotive, aerospace, and product design more generally speaking. One of the most legendary racecars of the 1960's was in fact made with a wood chassis (the Marcos GT), and at the time, it had a reputation for being an amazing & very fast car. They only switched to steel in order to save approximately 8 man hours in production.
With digital manufacturing techniques, we believe that bamboo could become a key raw material in the development of future EVs. Ford already built a Ford Escape that can be composted by being buried in the ground - so there is a little bit of precedent here. Oh, and the Japanese are now looking to build satellites with these materials so as to 'reduce space waste.'
Join us. Reduce space waste. Help us build cars & airplanes out of bamboo. Lol. Not because it's eco ... but simply because it's just a better material to work with.
How to turn a perfectly normal day into a Wild One ?!?! Easy. With
Looks like Monday came early for these folks! Happy to provide the Anza 500 And a Presidio 750 to some good friends from the Triad Electric Vehicle Association. That's some space aged swangin and bangin ...
What if the ELF had ... real doors? Modular, moddable body panels? All wheel drive? Oh, and suspension too, of course :). Stay tuned folks, as it looks like all our hard work over the years may be finally coming together after all. An upgrade like this doesn't come for free! As of January 1, we're now completely wrapped up with our legacy ELF repairs, and moved into a new method of only providing components & tech support (our universal ebike kits & replacement components are useful for any ebike, regardless of brand). While this was a difficult decision, it was absolutely necessary in order to reach that next chapter. In our shop, we can barely finish a big ELF restoration every ~3 months, as they tend to turn into an all-consuming arts n crafts project - but if we focus on parts, we can help an ELF owner help themselves every 3 days! And by collaborating with a local bike shop, you'd probably get it done cheaper and faster anyways! The ELFs are all spread out across the US and Canada now, making physical tech support impractical anyways, save for when we're making delivery runs! Stay tuned, and thanks for sticking with us this far! More awesome sauce coming soon!
Resin infusion test #6 , done some time in fall 2022. Is this the world's first natural fiber composite scooter deck? Who cares - the important thing is that we got both strength + flex/springback in a combination that you can only currently find in skatebords (NOT adult scooters)! Well, that depends on if/when we actually get this thing built and on the road :). The long term goal was really just to learn the process - the scrapwood cored , flax fiber kick bike is more of a happy accident. This was one of the best resin infusion tests because the wood created flow channels that really helped the resin better permeate the part.
Does your electric scooter have Big Deck Energy, or are your wheels teeny weeny 😉
We've gone to see the wizard.
Nah just kidding ... I am the wizard. Building bikes is just more fun on location ;).
Behold, the world's first all wheel drive Stein Trike (that we know of). Should hopefully have it mostly done this afternoon. May there be many more of these built and enjoyed one day. All hail the ingenious All Axle Hub Motor & controller kit from for making this possible and practical. This build will be used as an important part of the owner's long term physical rehab strategy.
This vehicle is the result of >15 years hard fought research, engineering, and real world testing by Stein, as well as ~8 years learning & development by SolMobil. Any further improvements will undoubtedly come from similar types of efforts. Nothing good in this world ever came for free, and these beautiful machines are no exception. But I truly believe that their price reflects the value that they offer to the owner.
Hi guys! We're making some space in the warehouse, and have identified a number of used items that we'd love to clear out of the shop. If you need any of this stuff, please take a look. Thanks.
ThudBuster LT seat post - bicycle parts - by owner - bike sale - craigslist 27.2mm Thud Buster LT seatpost by Cane Creek. I bought this to put on a customer's bike, but then didn't end up using it. So the seat post has been installed, then uninstalled, but never actually...
We built a bike ... this one is for my boy . This is the least chill beach cruiser you'll ever see - that 9 Continents motor will ear your face off ! Happy Thanksgiving, everybody!
Had a learning moment this afternoon on the ! As part of the tool demo, we needed to make a part, so we decided to finally cut out the deck of the SolMobil solar powered kickbike prototype. We made this panel last year as part of a materials research study into high performance natural fiber composites. When finished, this deck should make for the sweetest wood grained, solar powered e-scooter on the block 😎.
"Dude I'm really sorry ... but this bike is way too fast for your wife 😂"
We got a new mommy with a need for speed! Congrats to Noah and Madelyn for choosing to enter their new life chapter in e-style. It's not all about minivans, guys - if you have enough time and space for a car, then you absolutely have time and space for an ebike as well. It's always a pleasure to assist a couple fellow grads in their quest for responsible modes of transportation.
Specs:
- Mode 1: euro style 25km/h/15.5mph for uber high efficiency/touring/greenways 420w
- Mode 2: speed pedelec 28mph/746w
- Mode 3: 1200w 35mph (could be run at much, much higher power levels with a different battery choice) . Offroad/private property only.
We wish every bike on the planet had the Cycle Analyst from ! It makes ebike performance tuning not only possible, but easy and fun! This bike also features the All Axle hub motor, Baserunner L10 and the secksy discontinued Cycle Lumenator headlight !!!
The 48v, 15ah battery was handmade in Winston-Salem, as is becoming our standard. It has a max discharge rate of 30a, and a max charge rate of 15a. Gimme that regen, baby. In store customers can purchase these batteries at a $100 discount over the web price ! Email for details. Thanks!
Every day, advancements in composites technology are made that will allow humans to breathe new life into some of the most timeless aircraft designs ever drawn up. Take a look at 3 examples of how solar power can, and eventually will, completely transform general aviation:
1. concept 6 seat transporter
2. the re-imagining of the rigid airship. All of the modern dirigible concepts, even the one funded by Jeff Bezos, feature some type of e drive system, whether or not it is a hybrid.
3. here we have two examples of guys who have completed building the Carbon Dragon, the world's first microlift sail plane (designed by Jim Maupin and first flown in 1988). This unpowered glider has been flown for over 10 hours without landing. It has also been flown 237 miles in one go, all without any type of motor assistance - just thermals. Numerous world records were set in this first glider, which was purchased by aerodynamics expert Gary Osoba. He claims an up-to unlimited flight range under ideal conditions - and that's without a freaking motor - all because of the unique way a microlift sail plane can exploit trailing and stringy thermals unavailable to any other type of aircraft, even bigger sailplanes. To date, only 5 have been completed, but over 70 sets of plans were sold before they we made available online more recently.
4. Take a look at the Archaeopteryx by Ruppert Composites. I double dog dare ya ... what an amazing example of the possibilities afforded to us by modern composites. The US flight school for this amazing aircraft just so happens to be down the road from us, kinda close to Mooresville, NC. Wouldn't ya know 😉. We're planning a field trip/pilgrimage of sorts, so let me know if you're interested in participating in that :).
With modern composites, and the addition of solar cells embedded into the wings, any aircraft can see a notable boost in available energy. Solar panels work notably better on aircraft than they do on the ground, since they are both 1. Above the clouds 2. Exposed to much colder temperatures than the ground, which boosts power production.
Who else is taking out their ebike this Sunday for int'l coffee outside day ?!?! Join us in at 7am this Sunday if you are local, and, um, one of the cool kids !!! We're riding out to one of our secret spots at Salem Lake to brew some coffee on the 'ole using renewable alcohol fuel, of course
Got a 'holy s**t' text from a customer who's realizing just how good these systems are. He's gone 35 miles on about 1/2 a battery. We told him the real world range for this converted bike would be around 45-75 miles ... so it comes as no surprise to us ;) it helps if you go with our class leading batteries - the most power dense, fastest charging, slimmest form factor 48v 15ah battery available anywhere - handmade in North Carolina (we're working towards UN/UL battery homologation for standard size batteries - but with a twist like you've never seen before).
I know, I know, y'all have waited long enough ... welcome to the future of transportation technology! The new Bülk velomobile is the epitome of style and functionality - many claim to have the most efficient vehicles on the road, but in reality ... we do ... so don't believe the hype nah 😂. Send us an email, or check back soon for updates as we work through the process of procuring our first, but certainly not last demo velomobile from VelomobileWorld.com! What could(n't) you do with a high quality electric velomobile in your garage? We decided that Americans may want to buy these things if they, were, um, available to buy!!!
The Wild One in its natural habitat
Got a chance to talk to Jay at Sojourn Cyclery during Cyclecon this past weekend. What a killer example of what you can do with an ebike. Yes, this bike is made from mostly walnut, and that bottom bracket did come from Optibike! Simply amazing
What do you guys think, is this battery a rip off? After opening the case, we saw that it isn't just missing some cells on the outside - it's empty on the inside as well! Meaning this '60v' pack is really just 15 single cells strung together in series, even though the case can hold twice as many cells! Though the cell itself is quality (Samsung 25r), the case was not watertight, and features vent holes for some reason (probably because their tiny battery gets extra warm under load). This caused the bms to get wet and fail. Besides waterproofing your battery, this is also one reason we use the DALY bms system - its waterproof! As you can see, typical low end BMS units without a nice waterproof, ESD resistant case are highly vulnerable to corrosion and water damage, even more so than the cells themselves.
And just like that, this ELF has a new owner. This one is AA #38, which was made in 2013, but it was sourced from the original owner who kept it in a garage. Though we didn't have to do too much to get this one rolling, it did get a couple things, such as new front wheels, tires, seat cover, and battery. Who's next? .trip.california
Some pics from the as they first arrived at the in ! We were very happy to be hosting them as they complete the North American leg of their world tour! After visiting our workshop, the crew decided they want to build their own solar bikes once they get back home! We're more than happy to help!
We have a random assortment of old stocked inventory from 2021. This includes a couple renogy folding solar panel systems (100w and a 200w), renogy 12v power inverters (700-2000w), as well as various light ev components (everything from go karts, to seat stems, to old ELF motors and more)! If anyone wants to buy any of this excess equipment, and help us organize the shop, hit us up! We will be striking unusually good deals on this extra stuff for the rest of the summer! Help me make space for a bug new project! Thanks
We have been using the DALY bms system for years now, and believe it to be one of the best bms systems on the market for ebikes and light ev's. Today, we decided to buy & test their new active balancing bms units, which are able to actively balance cell strings at up to 1amp. Previously, this was only achieved while charging --- but now, thanks to the new balancing unit from DALY, we have the ability to keep the battery pack balanced continuously. How much better can ebikes become? Let's continue to find out !
I think solar hat lady is the happiest person I've ever met! The is absolutely full of the most positive vibes! Summer is far from over, guys!
