Did you know a U.S. Department of Energy’s Plastics Innovation Challenge has researchers working on a way to upcycle plastic waste into lubricants?
If this project is successful, the general public could see day-to-day benefits from this research through a less adverse impact from plastic waste, and cheaper — and potentially better functioning — lubricants used in cars and other industrial activities.
“Reducing plastic wastes to lubricating oils is quite remarkable and may lead to a greener and more sustainable future,” Ali Erdemir (one of the head researchers) said. ♻️

Did you know that synthetic lubricants do not originate from crude oil like conventional mineral oil?
Instead, synthetic lubricants are formulated from derivates of natural gas and other base materials. The differences between these base fluids must be understood in order to accommodate the needs of the machine application, as well as the properties of the lubricant. Consult with your lubricant supplier before making a change to or from a synthetic lubricant.
