Wintry walk in the woods of Finn Camp after Sunday Sauna. Where home runs are born at the edge of our "Field of Dreams."
"There really is nothing like the Finn Camp. I've tried to explain it to folks around the country, but it really is impossible to convey the sights, sounds, smells and memories. How do you tell someone how it feels to sit in a sauna until you can't take anymore, then run as fast as you can across the damp grass, run the length of a wooden dock and dive into a lake of cold, rootbeer colored water. It just doesn't get any better than that. The Finn Camp was and is the best of life's simple pleasures."

Whenever I get coffee as a gift and drink it on Christmas, I think and remember Finn Camper Thomas Christensen, killed in Baquba Iraq on Christmas Day, 2003:
Army Staff Sgt. Thomas W. Christensen
Died December 25, 2003 Serving During Operation Iraqi Freedom-
42, of Atlantic Mine, Mich.; assigned to the 652nd Engineer Battalion, U.S. Army Reserve, based in Ellsworth, Wis.; killed during a mortar attack on Dec. 25 in Baquba, Iraq.
The last time Staff Sgt. Thomas W. Christensen called his oldest brother from Iraq, he was relatively upbeat about life in a war zone.
“He had no complaints about being in Iraq. Other than it was kind of hot in the summer,” said Chris Christensen, of Detroit. In the last call, he said “they were shooting at him a lot less. It wasn’t so hot. He wanted me to send him some coffee.”
The coffee was in the mail when the family got the news that Christensen, 42, had died in a Dec. 25 mortar attack on his living quarters. He was with an Army Reserve bridge-building unit. Christensen joined the Army around 1981 and left in 1994, becoming a reservist.
God Bless his family and thank you for the ultimate sacrifice Thomas.

A Finn Camp kid is a happy kid!
In praise of our Ravintola area- where many a pasty has been served, many a bell chiming has been heard, many a memory has been made!
This documentary is about Finn Camp in Wixom, Michigan. A private lake and association that provides a place for Finnish Americans to enjoy nature and maintain the Finnish culture for their members. It was started by a small group of Finnish immigrants- my great-grandfather among them. You need to be Finnish and be of good moral character to join. Produced by Carol Melancon, Constance York and Erick Leskinen.
