Just wanted to share a little update on CHS soil investigation. I spoke with the Licensed Site Remediation Professional from T&M Associates, who is assigned to the Colonia High School case. He informed me that the soil impact investigation has been completed. Over 400 soil samples were reportedly collected around the school’s building. He is now working with the USEPA on getting the workplan for soil remediation approved. He indicated that due to some delays in the administrative process the soil excavation won’t happen this Summer.
If anyone wants to reach out with questions his contact information is below:

I’ve recently heard that two CHS students were recently diagnosed with brain tumors/cysts. One is a graduating CHS senior, and the other graduated from JFK after transferring out of CHS last year. I was also told one of the students discovered the tumor after experiencing seizures. Does anyone have any information on these cases? Now that it has been confirmed by the State that PCB are present in the school and soil, I would love to know more.
I saw this posted on another site. The owner is a former CHS graduate and is helping to spread the word. Very cool!
As many of you recall, after discovering hundreds of fellow students, teachers, and faculty members were diagnosed with rare cancers and other disorders (many of them being brain tumors), I began my quest to prove a link to Colonia High School. Recently, the state of NJ confirmed our findings of dangerous levels of PCB and chlorinated pesticides…all of which are known to be harmful and cause a variety of cancers and other maladies. A remediation plan is being developed and should begin a a year. In the meantime, students remain in the building.
May of 2022, we did a story with WPIX channel 11. The story as it aired appears below.
Now, why I am bringing this is again? I was just informed our story won an Emmy Award Saturday night!
Feel free to share!

Superintendent's letter dated March 28, 2023 and Google Map street view of band kids sitting in/near the area, where PCBs were found 2,300 times the NJ limit. Yet, the letter reads: "while the issues with the soil must be addressed, they do not pose any immediate health concerns for out students, staff, and visitors"!!
May we suggest that the contaminated soil areas be marked/fenced off, so that kids no longer sit on toxic soil?
Results of the soil, dust and caulk sampling conducted by Edyta Komorek in September 2022. Note: soil sample concentration at 575 mg/kg vs the NJ Residential Soil Remediation Standard of 0.25 mg/kg (2,300 x the allowable concentration)!!
Indoor Air Quality report for Colonia High School obtained from the NJDEP website
In response to parents' inquiry regarding test results at CHS, the NJDOH sent us their Letter Health Consultation.
The greatest PCB concentration detected in indoor air of CHS is 244 ng/m3. The State of NJ does not currently have an exposure limit for PCBs in the air. USEPA's exposure limit of 600 ng/m3 was used instead.
For comparison, the State of Vermont has a School Action Level for PCBs in indoor air set at much more protective level of 100 ng/m3. In Vermont classrooms with air results exceeding 100 ng/m3 cannot be occupied by students!!

CHS Concerned Parents group has recently reached out to the US EPA regarding Edyta Komorek’s sampling results. The US EPA’s PCB Coordinator, Mr. Steven Ferreira responded indicating that the agency has been made aware of the sampling results and:
„has discussed these results with NJDEP, and stands ready to support our state counterparts in assessing the potential impacts from PCBs within the High School. In addition, we recognize that a cleanup for PCB remediation waste present within site soils may require review and approval by EPA pursuant to TSCA and, if needed, will assist project consultants in assessing and addressing this contamination.
EPA recognizes that the results come on the heels of concerns recently raised about reports of former students from Colonia High School contracting brain tumors. We are committed, along with the state, to the health and safety of this community.”
For further question from the community, Mr. Ferreira can be reached at 212-637-3759 or by email [email protected]
Mr. Kevin Schick or Ms. Amanda Gettelfinger of NJDEP’s Contaminated Site Remediation and Redevelopment Program can both be reached by phone at 609-633-6801.
We, the parents of CHS students, hope that the NJDEP and US EPA will do right by the community this time around and make sure a thorough investigation is conducted.
Colonia High School update: soil samples have been collected, air samples scheduled to be collected this weekend.
"Prolonged exposure to the highly toxic chemicals is dangerous to humans, according to researchers and governments across the world. PCBs increase the risk of chronic diseases like cancer and short-term symptoms like diminished attention span and difficulty breathing. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 1979 banned their manufacture."

For kids in schools, PCBs are more common and more dangerous than guns | Dissident Voice CB is short for polychlorinated biphenyls — a group of manmade pollutants that were banned by the U.S. Congress in 1979. Despite this ban, the many PCBs that were used in the construction of school buildings from the 1930s to the 1970s are still exposing kids to a dangerous threat. PCBs are listed...

Pesticide Exposure Ups Brain Cancer Risk by 20 Percent, Study Finds • Drugwatcher.org A recent study found that exposure to agricultural pesticides may increases brain cancer risk by up to 20 percent.
Here are some health effects of PCB exposure (source: US EPA). The soil sampling results identified PCB concentration at 575 mg/kg, while the NJ soil remediation standard allows for 0.25 mg/kg of PCBs in the soil!! That is 2300 times over the regulatory standard!
