In a hole in the ground, there lived a Hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort.

Hi I’m and Barnes and noble gave me the keys to their Instagram for some reason, here we go
The Booker Prize shortlist is finally here, and we’re thrilled to see which authors have been recognized for their incredible works of fiction.
Edmund de Waal, Chair of the Booker Prize 2024 judges says, “This is timely and timeless fiction, in which there is much at stake. Here are books that unfold with quietness and stealth, as well as books that are incendiary . . . they are works of fiction that inhabit ideas by making us care deeply about people and their predicaments, their singularity in a world that can be indifferent or hostile.”
Take a look through this year’s shortlist on B&N Reads and stack up your .

That means it’s time to start new grades, new classes, perhaps even new schools, and meet some new teachers and friends in the process.

The Names by Billy Collins
Yesterday, I lay awake in the palm of the night.
A soft rain stole in, unhelped by any breeze,
And when I saw the silver glaze on the windows,
I started with A, with Ackerman, as it happened,
Then Baxter and Calabro,
Davis and Eberling, names falling into place
As droplets fell through the dark.
Names printed on the ceiling of the night.
Names slipping around a watery bend.
Twenty-six willows on the banks of a stream.
In the morning, I walked out barefoot
Among thousands of flowers
Heavy with dew like the eyes of tears,
And each had a name --
Fiori inscribed on a yellow petal
Then Gonzalez and Han, Ishikawa and Jenkins.
Names written in the air
And stitched into the cloth of the day.
A name under a photograph taped to a mailbox.
Monogram on a torn shirt,
I see you spelled out on storefront windows
And on the bright unfurled awnings of this city.
I say the syllables as I turn a corner --
Kelly and Lee,
Medina, Nardella, and O'Connor.
When I peer into the woods,
I see a thick tangle where letters are hidden
As in a puzzle concocted for children.
Parker and Quigley in the twigs of an ash,
Rizzo, Schubert, Torres, and Upton,
Secrets in the boughs of an ancient maple.
Names written in the pale sky.
Names rising in the updraft amid buildings.
Names silent in stone
Or cried out behind a door.
Names blown over the earth and out to sea.
In the evening -- weakening light, the last swallows.
A boy on a lake lifts his oars.
A woman by a window puts a match to a candle,
And the names are outlined on the rose clouds -
Vanacore and Wallace,
(let X stand, if it can, for the ones unfound)
Then Young and Ziminsky, the final jolt of Z.
Names etched on the head of a pin.
One name spanning a bridge, another undergoing a tunnel.
A blue name needled into the skin.
Names of citizens, workers, mothers and fathers,
The bright-eyed daughter, the quick son.
Alphabet of names in a green field.
Names in the small tracks of birds.
Names lifted from a hat
Or balanced on the tip of the tongue.
Names wheeled into the dim warehouse of memory.
So many names, there is barely room on the walls of the heart.

Seventeen-year-old Leopold Berry is seeing weird things around Los Angeles. A man who pops a tooth into a parking meter. A glowing trapdoor in a parking lot. A half-mechanical raccoon with its tail on fire that just won’t leave him alone. Every hallucinatory moment seems plucked from a cheesy 1990s fantasy TV show called Max's Adventures in Sunderworld—and that’s because they are.
Not a good sign.
Presenting our September Young Adult Book Club pick, Sunderworld, Vol. I: The Extraordinary Disappointments of Leopold Berry by Ransom Riggs.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I really enjoyed this one! The pacing was perfect, the characters were so well written, and the story was so intense.
We get three points of view - Leah, McKenna, and the detective. I loved the women characters! The detective was obviously doing his job, but i must admit he was not my favorite character 😉
Overall it’s a really well written story involving domestic abuse and the lengths these women will go to in order to protect themselves and each other.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This was quite a ride! Just when i thought I knew what was going on, it changed again. We alternate between 3 POVs - Present day, 2000, and a 3rd POV of a mother and child. The POVs shifted quite nicely, and leaves you unable to put it down. I absolutely had to know what was going to happen next.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ loved this book! This is a totally bingeable pool read about a couple that makes some really questionable choices. I found myself many times going “just go to the police?!!” The final twist was absolutely out of left field and i loved it.
Save this post to remember to add it to your TBR!
Next on Jordan’s vacation reads:
Hi from Lisbon! You can’t see much of the background here but I’m standing in the Treasury of the Sé de Lisboa, or the Lisbon Cathedral, which is a fitting place to feature my fourth vacation book, The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon! I’m only halfway through this guy because it’s pretty dense, but so far it’s stunning and imposing, just like this church. The cathedral traces its architectural history back to the year 1147 - I wonder what people were reading back then?!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This book is written so beautifully. i went into it not knowing anything about it - i was told to not even read the synopsis - so i wasn’t sure what to expect! i was thinking it was just an average time travel sci fi, but it’s so much more than that. there are little references and so much to take in, and it’s only 198 pages! Overall, highly recommend and yes i did cry.
“I am more sensitive to your footsteps, I think, than anyone alive. And everyone is alive, somewhere in time.”
Hi from Funchal, Madeira! Funchal, which you can see spread out in the background, is the capital city of Madeira. The majestic sea cliffs and hilly terrain make it the perfect setting to show off my third vacation book, The Antiquity Affair by Lee Kelly and Jennifer Thorne! Any fan of Indiana Jones absolutely cannot miss this one! It takes place in Egypt, so actually the polar opposite of Madeira in landscape, but there’s definitely a mysticism to the ruggedness here that makes you think buried treasure could be anywhere!
Thanks Jordan! We love following your vacation and book recommendations!
This big hearted debut about music and its ability to heal proves that its never too late for second chances!
AND it’s never too late to try the Passion Tango Iced Tea Lemonade!
Did you see the art work on our windows from Occoquan Elementary School?! The kids did a great job, we all love Eric Carle!

A special thank you to Mindy and Occoquan Elementary School for having your book fair with us! It was so much fun!

Hi from the middle of the ocean! I’ve been doing a lot of lounging and I got through my first vacation book - Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros! It seems to be the most talked about book of the moment, and I had to see what all the hype was about. It was fantastic, and I can’t wait for the sequel in November!
Thanks Jordan! We can’t wait to see what you read next!
