While June 21 is the official start of summer and Memorial Day is the traditional start, that's just how we humans look at it. Wildlife don't have a written calendar and for them summer is in full swing at the Preserve.

Our Seasonal Wildlife Walk: Summer Edition is coming up. We will take a mindful stroll around the preserve, using sight, sound, smell, and feelings to absorb what summertime in the Golden State has to offer. For about 3 hours we will traverse 2.5 miles of wetland, riparian, grassland, and oak savannah habitats observing wild animals and plants, and appreciating the differences in summer compared to other seasons.

Our winter residents and spring migrants have departed. We will say hello to summer breeders such as Western Kingbirds, Swainson's hawks, and at least 3 species of swallows. California ground squirrels, cottontails, jackrabbits, deer and all the birds are busy with their young. With luck we will observe wild families with new youngsters who call the Preserve home.

Remember to wear appropriate clothing, bring water, snacks, and binoculars.

Group size is limited, so please register at cachecreekconservancy dot org/seasonal-wildlife-series

We had a great day at the 30th anniversary of Walk on the Wildside at Beach Lake Park in Sacramento. The kids learned about the paws that went with the animal pelts. Then the kids made cards to thank Mother Nature for her bounty.

If you are in the Davis area, a visit to the Verge Experiment (California natives and drought tolerant plants from around the world) on the Russell Blvd bike path might be fun - it is a blaze of color.

This photo, taken April 14 by Beth Savidge, captures only a part of the planted area. The neighbor to the east has added lots of annual wildflowers!

A link to the story and plant list PDF is in the comments.

The Conservancy collaborates with UC Davis colleagues to learn and share and to teach college interns, our future climate change heroes.

This year we are starting a small mammal trapping program to monitor our restoration efforts. Healthy animals mean a happy habitat, our Grasslands in the case of this photo.

The researchers in the photo are (from left to right) Francesca Rubino, Graduate Teaching Assistant and Student Researcher at University of California, Davis, Ivy Liu, Restoration Botanist at the Conservancy and Felicia Wang, Restoration Biologist at the Conservancy.

It takes more than one season's data to have confidence in a trend; we need to keep this program going to make it count. Will you help us continue these programs by donating?

Spending lots of quiet time out in nature, waiting for the perfect shot, brings us closer to the creatures that live there. Jan Lightfoot, local photographer, tells us a story of her encounter with a Mockingbird.

She is also offering a workshop at Point Reyes for using ICM, which stands for Intentional Camera Motion. Sounds fascinating.

Our Story

The Cache Creek Conservancy (CCC) manages the 130-acre Cache Creek Nature Preserve, just a few miles west of Woodland, CA, which it helped to restore in 2000. The Nature Preserve site was a gravel mine prior to restoration and is now a prime example of how thoughtful and cooperative efforts can restore environmental beauty and provide opportunities for people to encounter native wildlife and plants. The Nature Preserve has five habitat types: oak savannah, native grassland, riparian forest, wetlands, and a garden important to the Native American community. CCC was at the forefront of establishing productive relationships among stakeholders with varied and competing interests.

The innovation exhibited by the Conservancy and its partners was recognized at 2002 Governor’s Environmental and Economic Leadership Awards for its sustainable partnership management of the Nature Preserve. CCC received the 2010-11 Education Award from the Soil and Water Conservation Society and the 2011 Steward of the Natural Environmental Award from Yocha Dehe Community Fund.

CCC also implements Yolo County’s Cache Creek Area Plan to restore riparian and native vegetation along 15 miles of Cache Creek. CCC partners with local governmental and non-governmental entities to remove invasive weeds and restore riparian habitat. CCC has its license to hold easements for Swainson’s Hawk, an endangered species.

Essential to its mission is the “Experience the Creek” environmental education program. Primarily designed for K-12 students, this program includes hands-on learning experiences that support State’s science and social science standards, including an extensive Native American component. CCC is piloting an active senior nature education program to promote outdoor experiences for adults over the age of 40.
