I am doing a 90 day group. I genuinely want to help people, especially women, become their healthiest and strongest (whatever that looks like for you). I want to help better peopleโs lives long term, not just for January. I want this to be different than basically every program out there. Letโs talk about what Pilates actually isโฆ I had a conversation with a physical therapist that I see, and she sends people to me. She believed Pilates was only to make your abs strong & to stretch some. I realized a lot of people probably think the same. โฃ

The spine & core are focused on because everything should move from the center. โ๐ ๐ฐ๐ถโ๐ณ๐ฆ ๐ฐ๐ฏ๐ญ๐บ ๐ข๐ด ๐บ๐ฐ๐ถ๐ฏ๐จ ๐ข๐ด ๐บ๐ฐ๐ถ๐ณ ๐ด๐ฑ๐ช๐ฏ๐ฆ ๐ช๐ฏ ๐ง๐ญ๐ฆ๐น๐ช๐ฃ๐ญ๐ฆโ -๐๐. That means your spine needs to be able to move & be strong. Pilates is definitely NOT just working the abs, and you have to work your ass off to be given a stretch. โฃ

โPilates is alignment based strength training- I believe Alycea Ungaro said this but not for sure. Just didnโt want to not give credit if it did come from her. Pilates should be challenging, it should work the entire body (including your abs), and include some stretch. Iโll elaborate on the principles another day and what actually makes Pilates, Pilates. โฃ

A โshoulder bridgeโ is the exact opposite of sitting in a chair. Think about how often you sit throughout the day. Whether itโs sitting at your desk all day, commuting to work, driving the kids to school and their actives- So. Much. Sitting. โฃ

This exercise checks a lot of boxes- hip opening, glute strengthening, spinal articulation, and the list goes on. If youโve been sitting for a while, do 5-10 really controlled ones and see how you feel. This is also a little sneak peak of what some of my new on demand classes will include ๐ โฃ

Iโve taken a few days to condense my thoughts, and find the words to describe this retreat. I still donโt have a way to really condense it. The inner child healing & ancestral forgiveness by was everything I never knew I needed. โs yoga, sound healing journey, and breath work transformed my life and gave me everything possible to release pain & trauma that were stuck inside of my body. It was so much more than this, but to put it in the simplest terms- Alix brought it to the surface, and Cally released it. Last, but certainly not least, these incredible women. These 12 women (my soul sisters) are truly, all pure magic. We all were able to assist each other to dig deeper. Someone elseโs power would help us find our own. I will never have enough words to explain this experience. Iโm pretty sure Iโm still vibrating, quite literally. If you have anything inside of you that wants to embark on a journey like this, please do it. Just go. It actually changed my life, who I am as a person, a mother, a wife, and everything else I am in life. I will always be grateful for these women and this experience. I know it was one of the biggest transformations in my journey on this earth. Again, absolutely magical.

She has given me permission me to share some of her story. Whitney was diagnosed with diastasis recti (abdominal separation) after her first pregnancy, and has struggled with back pain ever since. She now has 3 beautiful babes. She has worked so incredibly hard in our sessions once a week, as well as doing her homework when she can find the time. This is really a testament to her hard work. I was just there to boss her around ๐ In the 4 months we have been working together, her back pain has completely resolved. โฃ

I recently had a conversation with a physical therapist about Pilates and teacher training. There is apparently a one day class that exists to train people how to teach on the reformer- ONE DAY! ๐คฏ This is wild to me!! Fortunately and unfortunately (long story) Pilates is not trademarked. You can call anything Pilates.โฃ

If youโre looking for an instructor or unsure about your instructor, here are some questions to ask:โฃ
โฃ
๐ What is their certification? How many hours? Is it comprehensive? (Meaning on all apparatuses) The reputable teacher training programs are 600+ hours, and teach basically all pieces of equipment that Joseph Pilates created- or the ones that still exist. โฃ
โฃ
๐ How long have they been teaching? This isnโt always super important because the best instructors in the world had to start somewhere. โฃ
โฃ
๐If you have any specific needs- pregnancy, postpartum, knee/hip replacements, etc. ask if they are specifically certified or knowledgeable with that. For example, I do prenatal/postnatal, and I know a lot about spinal issues. I would probably refer out if someone was 3 months post shoulder replacement and coming from PT. A year later, Iโd be comfortable but fresh from surgery, Iโm not. Thatโs not my speciality. Any responsible instructor has no problem referring out, and knowing the scope of their teaching. โฃ
โฃ
If they are only certified in reformer, or whatever, they do not teach the Pilates method. It IS a method! The principles and knowledge of the method as a whole are important. If itโs not, then youโre just doing random exercises on Pilates equipment. This goes for any form of movement. Credentials matter. โฃ

This is not intended to bash anyone, or tell everyone you should to come to me. I do want this to be a positive space. I just want everyone to be informed and safe in whatever type of movement they choose ๐ค โฃ
Reason no. 4,682 to do Pilates: for them. I swear it makes me a better mom. The mind/body connection, I am more patient (aka, sane!) on days when I move my body, and it gives me the energy to keep up with these two wild things ๐ Happy Monday from the 3 of us!
During my workout I remembered that my New Yearโs goal was to do candlestick with full splits. Itโs July 12th and the first time Iโve tried it this year ๐คฃ posting this for accountability. Side note: Iโve never been able to do the splits in my life. Let alone upside down. Send prayers!

Right now, I think everyone could use some deep breaths in their life. Iโve noticed with myself, and my clients, that most people breathe so shallowly. In Joseph Pilates book he says (Iโm paraphrasing) that we should be taking long, deep breaths. Inhaling fully, and exhaling so much that we โsqueeze every atom of air from the lungsโ. Basically, if you arenโt exhaling fully you just have a bunch of stale air at the bottom of your lungs and no one wants that ๐
๐ปโโ๏ธ My clients know Iโm so picky about breathing during The Hundred; specifically the exhale, and that is why. โฃ
โฃ
For today, my challenge to everyone is to stop and do โThe Hundredโ breathing. Just sit down, maybe close your eyes. Inhale for 5 seconds, then exhale for 5 seconds. Repeat 10 times. Hence the name- 100 breaths. You can also play around with it and inhale for 3 seconds, exhale for 7, etc. to make sure you are getting that full exhale so you can breathe fresh oxygen into your body. โฃ

I am married, have 2 sons, and am now living just north of Atlanta. I found Pilates after the birth of my first son and fell in love!
