Staffing shortages are a reality, but that doesn't have to impact your child's education. Here are some tips:

1. Set up a communication sheet to track whether services occurred.

2. Include contingency plans in your child's Individualized Education Program (IEP). If a staff member is not hired, outline what the school will do to ensure progress on current goals.

3. Speak up and offer suggestions. Be proactive and collaborate with the team to find a solution. If needed, get creative—think outside the box. For example, if there's a shortage of a specific service provider, consider alternatives like a camp with a mentor or buddy to address the missing time. This could be a cost-effective solution that provides a real-time experience for your child. In some cases, it might be more economical for the town as well.

4. Ask questions to understand the next steps. Please look over your child's IEP with a trained professional to make sure that the documented service hours align with what your child is actually receiving. Many give free consults ( like myself) .

5. Work collaboratively to develop a plan for compensatory services or explore alternative service locations to meet your child's needs."
