The joys of social media.

Came across a real jerk today on social media. He demanded a significant reduction of his legitimate plumbing bill. For no reason other than he wanted to pay less. If he didn't receive the reduction he threatened to plaster very negative reviews all over social media.
He didn't receive any reduction so now we'll see what happens!

The bitter cold this week is a recipe for cold hands and wheezy batteries. It can also lead to frozen water pipes. Such a scenario led to a house fire in Gardner on Tuesday.
A multiple-alarm fire at 106 Greenwood St. was a started by homeowner using a blowtorch to thaw frozen pipes, according to Jennifer Mieth of the state Department of Fire Services. No one was injured in the fire, but firefighters from seven communities assisted Gardner in battling the blaze. In Worcester, a fire on Knowlton Avenue Tuesday was also caused by an attempt to use an open flame to combat frozen pipes, fire officials said.
Although temperatures are expected to rise into the high 40s Wednesday, more sub-zero weather is likely before the winter is done. The cold will bring with it more risk of frozen pipes.
To avoid the the damage from water freezing in pipes,

on Austin Street in Worcester, recommends a few simple steps. First, if your pipes are frozen, don’t use a torch or some other fire source to thaw them, even if the pipes are copper.
“We don’t recommend using any open flame to thaw pipes,” he said.

Instead, Mr. Shea said, the best approach is to prevent the pipes from freezing in the first place.
Some tips from the pros:

• Keep the heat in the house at a normal level. Keeping the thermostat at 50 to 60 degrees will help prevent the pipes from freezing. If freezing pipes are a regular problem the house should be heated as much as possible.

• Older homes are like wind tunnels. Except in rare occasions, pipes won’t freeze unless the wind hits them. To prevent this, before cold weather hits, go around checking the sill of the house to sea if there are any leaks. If they are, fill them with spray-on expanding insulation.

• Purchasing pipe insulation to wrap around the pipes also prevents wind from hitting them on cold days.

• The most likely pipes to freeze are those on outside walls. Most pipes on outside walls are for kitchen sinks. To reduce the risk, leave the kitchen cabinet doors open to radiate heat into the space under the sink.

• When it gets really cold we recommend people just let the water in the faucets drip. As long as the water is running, it won’t freeze.

• Homeowners can also wrap their water pipes with heat trace, or heat tape electrical products. The products use an electrical current to warm the pipes to prevent freezing. Some of the higher-end products have thermostat control, so they turn on when the temperature drops to a certain point.

• To thaw frozen pipes, raising the heat in the house may help, or using a hair dryer to warm the pipes.

• Sometimes the pipes are frozen solid. If a homeowner can’t get the water moving, they should call in a plumber before pressure from the frozen water bursts the pipes. Garbedian’s plumbers generally use industrial-strength hair dryers to warm the water inside enough to get it flowing.

• Further information on dealing with frozen water pipes may be found on the state Department of Fire Services website.
