Worcester EMS Worcester EMS is the professional, all ALS 9-1-1 ambulance service owned and operated by UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, MA.
Our career paramedics, communications specialists, supervisors, and medical and program directors are employed by UMass Memorial Medical Center, the region's only ACS-verified level 1 trauma center. Please: SAVE 9-1-1 FOR REAL EMERGENCIES!
This week nine members of the department, six riders and three support personnel, participated in the National EMS Memorial Bike Ride, to remember EMS providers from around the world that we have lost. Biking from Boston MA to Washington D.C, over 500 miles ridden, this is no easy task.
This year Paramedic Croteau was awarded the "Rookie of the year" award and Paramedic Kuenzler was awarded the "Support Person of the year" award.
We are extremely proud of the team for representing Worcester EMS!
Our thoughts are with the Cu***ng family and the Princeton Fire department
And in the end, we always stand shoulder to shoulder with our friends at WPD. Great fun Saturday night playing hockey and raising money for our charities.
Come on out for a good time.
Worcester EMS has specially trained Paramedics that make up a Tactical EMS unit assigned to the Massachusetts State Police STOP Team (Special Tactics and OPerations). Team Paramedics have operated with the MSP STOP Team since 2012 and are the exclusive Tactical EMS provider for MSP STOP, traveling with the team anywhere in the state. Worcester EMS Paramedics have carried blood on every team mission since July of 2023. Team Paramedics deploy with Troopers for high-risk missions to include warrant service, armed barricaded individuals, searches, and civil unrest to name a few.
In 2013, Worcester EMS Paramedics were deployed with Troopers in the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombing and the subsequent search and capture of the suspect. In 2016, Team Paramedics cared for the Trooper shot in a gun battle with a suspect in a murder, and in 2022 were the first Paramedics to treat a Police K9 after the passage of Nero’s Law which allows Paramedics to care for injured Police K9’s. Worcester EMS Paramedics are also one of the very few agencies in Massachusetts performing Medication Assisted Intubations. Worcester EMS Paramedics deployed to approximately 100 high risk missions in 2023.
UMass Memorial/Worcester EMS Paramedics, as part of the Massachusetts State Police Special Tactical Operations (STOP) Team, recently achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first ground-based Paramedics in the state to administer blood products, treating a critically injured trauma patient. Exclusive providers for the MSP STOP Team since 2012, these specially trained Paramedics embarked on a groundbreaking initiative in July 2023, carrying blood products on every mission. This significant advancement enhances their ability to provide life-saving care in high-risk situations. Their pioneering efforts mark a crucial step forward in pre-hospital emergency treatment in Massachusetts.

On Friday 6 Paramedics of Worcester EMS finished out the 2023 east coast EMS memorial bike ride. Along with 3 Paramedics who provided support for the event. Starting in Boston and ending in Alexandria VA this years ride was around 500 Miles. Three of our team completed the entire ride. Cpt. Westberg, Paramedics Tubens and Oldroyd. The EMS memorial bike ride remembers pre-hospital providers who lost their lives. This year we rode in honor of 114 providers including one of our own paramedics Seth Ebbs.
Mobile Integrated Health Provides Personalized Care in Patients’ Homes Through a telehealth consult with a hospital-based physician, specially trained paramedics assess and treat patients in their homes to improve patient outcomes, decrease costs and reduce emergency department use.
Congratulations to Paramedics Oldroyd and Franklin! Both started their careers at Worcester EMS as a part of our inaugural BLS contingent, staffing A-11 nights. During that time, both completed Paramedic school and recently passed the grueling State / National exam to become certified Paramedics. Worcester EMS Paramedics operate under an expanded scope of practice and receive additional training and education in pharmacology and advanced critical airway procedures among other things. Best of luck as you transition into your new role as Paramedics. We are lucky to have you!
On April 12th 2018, Officer Sean Gannon was killed in the line of duty and his partner, K9 Nero was severely injured. Because protocols did not allow for the care of an injured K9 by EMS personnel, Nero could not receive care and transport by EMS, and definitive treatment was greatly delayed. From that event, “Neros Law” was passed, allowing EMS personnel to care for and transport to a Veterinarian, injured police dogs. Recently, Worcester EMS completed all the requirements to participate in “Nero’s Law”. This initiative is very important to our service as Worcester EMS Paramedics assigned to the State Police STOP Team along with Medstar Ambulance, collaborated to care for and transport the first K9 transported by ambulance since the passage of Nero’s Law. Sadly, K9 Frankie was killed in the line of duty that day, 26 July 2022. Worcester EMS has subsequently worked alongside Tufts University in Grafton to develop a teaching model for K9 care. Dr. Sean Majoy from Tufts has worked tirelessly to develop the curriculum and teach all Worcester EMS paramedics, EMT’s and Umass LifeFlight personnel. We cannot thank Dr. Majoy enough for his dedication to this program. Worcester EMS has also hosted several of our partners to include the Massachusetts State Police, Worcester Police and other municipal Police agencies in our training center. Our relationship with those agencies has allowed us to have a working police K9 present for all training days to aid in hands on learning. All Worcester EMS vehicles will be equipment with the appropriate K9 care equipment and stand ready to assist an injured police dog if needed. In addition to our Worcester EMS units, our LifeFlight team stands ready to transport seriously injured K9’s as well. Working with the MSP K9 section, LifeFlight has received specialized equipment to facilitate helicopter transport of injured K9’s to appropriate veterinary hospitals. Many thanks to Dr. Sean Majoy as well as the Massachusetts State Police for their contribution to this program.
