ArtsWorcester

When exhibitions are on view, our galleries are open 12-5 pm. Free and open to all.

At ArtsWorcester, we believe that contemporary art—the art made here and now, of all kinds and traditions– is fundamental to a vibrant, educated, and diverse city. Art shapes and enriches individual lives, while contributing substantively to social, economic, and civic development. With the arts now a key part of our city’s vision of its future, ArtsWorcester’s mission—engaging artists and the public to advance and celebrate contemporary art–becomes more crucial.

Only two weeks left to see Jakob Fioole's Sally Bishop Prize exhibition at the Worcester Art Museum in the Lower Frances L. Hiatt Gallery! It is open until September 1, 2024.

Jakob Fioole blends figuration and abstraction to create immersive scenes in his new solo show at the Worcester Art Museum. The artist paints ambiguous narratives that depict a world that is at once familiar and foreign. Fioole says that “While processing everything I encounter in this world and society, I study the things that move me most, looking to find alternative perspectives and combine them in a different context to create a new meaningful moment.”

Fioole is the winner of the Sally Bishop Prize, the top honor at the 2023 ArtsWorcester Biennial. In addition to a cash prize, the winner of this award receives a solo exhibition at the Worcester Art Museum.

This exhibition is organized in partnership with the Worcester Art Museum. It is funded in part by the Hoche-Scofield Foundation.

In Susan Black’s work, 'A Childhood on Green Hill', she reflects on growing up next to Worcester’s largest park. The park, which long ago used to be a home for bison, gave Black a place apart from the city where she was able to play, run wild, and form memories she would later recall as "magic".

Juror Claudio Eshun praised the work for its sense of playfulness, and for Black's layering and blending techniques she used to create an expansive scene.

In the short time Taylor Green has lived in , she has enjoyed seeing people going about their everyday lives in the city. In her painting, 'Boston Commons', Green depicts a scene in motion: people walking, children playing, and an overall active environment.

In his selection of 'Boston Commons' as a prize winner, juror Claudio Eshun hailed her work as a great display of movement and a powerful use of color and shadows.

Green's piece will be on view through August 18th as part of our 12th Annual "One" exhibit: a diverse show with no theme and over 220 works, it is surely an experience for every gallery-goer.
