in 1961 – The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem appear on The Ed Sullivan Show.
Evidently, another act failed to show up, and they performed live for a record-breaking 16 minutes, on arguably, the most popular American Television show of the time. This appearance led to the group being signed by Columbia records.
The televised performance and the success of the Clancys' and Makem's nightclub performances attracted the attention of John Hammond of Columbia Records. The group was offered a five-year contract with an advance of $100,000, a huge sum in 1961. For their first album with Columbia, A Spontaneous Performance Recording, they enlisted Pete Seeger, one of the leaders of the American Folk Revival, as backup banjo player. The record included songs that would soon become classics for the group, such as "Brennan on the Moor", "Jug of Punch", "Reilly's Daughter", "Finnegan's Wake", "Haul Away Joe", "Roddy McCorley", "Portlairge" and "The Moonshiner". The album was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Folk Recording in 1962. It lost to the Belafonte Folk Singers.
Around the same time that they recorded A Spontaneous Performance, the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem cut their final, eponymous album with Tradition Records. By the end of 1962, they released a second album with Columbia, Hearty and Hellish! A Live Nightclub Performance, and they played an acclaimed concert at Carnegie Hall. Additionally, they were making appearances on major radio and television talk-shows in America.

And don't forget to start your day with the world's favorite Irish music program - Four Green Fields with Bud Sargent from 9am - noon.
Just back from another great Ennis Tradfest. Kudos to the entire committee for putting on yet another superb showcase of music in the Banner County.
One of the first musicians I met in Ireland on my initial trip in 1987 was a local singer named Christy Heaney. He passed away not too long ago. I found a CD of his music at Custy’s Music Store and will be playing a couple of tracks from it. In addition I will be selecting music from the great P.J. Murrihy who I had the pleasure of meeting. Donal Clancy has a new album out with Brian McGrath and Damien Quinn. There’s also new fiddle music from Manus McGuire along with fiddle and accordion from Conor Atkins and Paul Clesham as well as a brand new CD from Sorcha Costello.
Last and certainly not least: I had the great opportunity to hear four young musicians at Cruises on the last night of the festival. They comprised one-half of a group that won a competition at the Fleadh in Mullingar. If I got this correctly, they go by the name of Binneas and are simply phenomenal. Some of their tunes will be played. What is incredible is that they are all in the 14-17 age range.
Tune in to 91.3 FM or wcuw.org to hear these and more on tomorrow’s show which might include some selections from a new release by Four Men and a Dog’s Gino Lupari if I can figure out how to download it.

This is the cover of the brand new CD from Cillian Vallely and David Doocey. On tomorrow’s edition of The Four Green Fields I will be featuring selections from it opening the show with a tune composed by David himself called “The Worcester Reel”. Please tune in at 9:00 am to 91.3 FM or wcuw.org to hear this and othe great music from Ireland.
Mary Lou will retire when the holidays are over after 30 years of OSSIAN USA!
