The Wild Fun Farm Shenanigans: seed saving!

08/25/2023

I used to can like my mom. My dad, knowing she had a house to care for, a farm, cows to milk, a garden that needed tending would bring home crates of peaches, pears and other fruits and vegetables in one big truck load. My mom canned for weeks while tending to the farm and 7 children. I used to think I also had to do big lots at a time…I got a cookbook on small batch canning. As things come in you can do a jar or four in an evening. You can roast your veg to put in the freezer one bag at a time. When things in the fridge need attention now…can it up. An hour of time and done. Tonight I had some tomatoes that needed attention, along with some rutabagas, three apples and a peach. Canned. Done. Roasted veg for freezer using the air fryer done. Small batches…

It wasn’t wild but it was fun! Our morning visitor.

The neighbor kids are paid to help out at The Wild Fun Farm and two tasks are cleaning goat pens and the chicken house. They are to put spoiled hay and straw into the composter which has three bins. Normally you fill one bin then let that break down some then move to the second. After bin #2 breaks down you move the compost to bin #3 to use. Well they don’t do that. They fill all the bins no matter how I show or tell them. So today my task is to sort this back out by clearing the bins. Then reorganizing it all so it goes back to being a three bin system. Bin #1 has a mat of straw on top so after scraping at that I find “black gold” below. No matter how badly the compost is put in a bin it does break down. I still would like a three bin system though. So here I go again…

Just picked a fresh basket of produce for my cousins who live in the city this morning. They have amongst other delicious delights collard greens, Swiss chard, an Ailsa Craig onion, fresh red cabbage, beets, and two sleeves of delicious garlic to go with their home grown pastured poultry from A&Z farms. We are two farms who farm together, create community and believe in regenerative land management and organic practices. Our produce, flowers, and herbs are the best! farming .com &Zfarm

Farm Shenanigans: my 2000 Toyota Tundra “Negrita” which was daily commuter has cleared over 300, 000 miles and I am so proud. She is battered on the outside but her engine is great and I have spent less than $2k in repair since I have owned her. She gets regular oil changes and tuneups. I’m proud of this old pony/farm truck!
