There will be plenty of arts and crafts for the kids, live music for all ages and, of course, lots of fall food, from oysters and apple fritters. The History Center is happy to serve as a project site for today's Day of Action, a countywide call for volunteerism coordinated by United Way of York County and Give Local York. We have a team of volunteers at the Colonial Complex re-painting the fence pickets. Thank you to Jeremy Kerstetter (wearing hat) and Wes Glusco from Site Design Concepts, Inc. and Donnyce Younger, left, and Layla Boyce from the York County Community Foundation for volunteering their time for the History Center.
For the Roundtable's October meeting, historian and musician Tyrone Cornbower and his wife Sue will bring to life a unique form of entertainment from the past — the Magic Lantern. Guests can view images from original magic lantern slides projected through the lenses of an 1890s stereopticon, accompanied with narration and music played on an 1880s portable parlor organ. Tyrone operates the device and narrates; Sue plays the organ. Tyrone has been a member of the 87th Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Reenactors Association and is an active volunteer with Gettysburg National Military Park. Links to pre-register or attend via Zoom coming soon.
It's a milestone Oyster Festival, our 50th year, making it our longest-running fundraiser and one of York County's most popular community events. We're moving the fun back to the Colonial Complex, and we'll have Pershing Avenue closed off to make the day more of a block party. Outside, we'll have live music, beer and wine, and lots of food -- and remember, "We're more than just oysters!" Inside, there will be lots of fun activities for families and kids. The event is a great opportunity to have your company's brand associated with the History Center and to support this delicious annual tradition. We're grateful for our three confirmed presenting sponsors: The W. Dale Brougher Foundation, the Friends of the York County History Center and The York Water Company, who are supporting Oyster Fest AND honoring longtime employee Vernon Bracey with their participation. Join this awesome group and be part this amazing York County event!https://www.yorkhistorycenter.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/2024-Oyster-Fest-sponsorships.pdf

Local Civil War historian Scott Mingus returns to the Roundtable in September to discuss his book, "Flames Beyond Gettysburg: The Confederate Expedition to the Susquehanna River, June 1863." Mingus will highlight some of the key moments from the story, including the Confederates' march through York and the burning of the Wrightsville Bridge. The bridge burning thwarted Confederate plans to cross into Lancaster and potentially move against Harrisburg. Attend in person at the new History Center Museum, 121 N. Pershing Ave., or online via Zoom. To register or receive the Zoom link, visit our Roundtable page here:

The new home of the York County History Center was once the epicenter of the industrial transformation that remade American life in the late 19th century. Today, the building is transforming the area again, this time to promote York County as a destination for cultural visitors interested in a fresh examination of York County’s past. Watch a video about this historic building that now houses our new History Center museum and is itself a carefully restored artifact.
