Another fun 3 days! Carson is an Outdoor Education major and landed a guiding job at a summer camp. He wanted to get additional multi-day backpacking under his belt before he heads out. We did a 30 mile stretch of the Appalachian Trail. He was excited for the challenge and ready for multiple 10+ mile days. Carson even got to experience trail magic! It wouldn’t be backpacking if there wasn’t rain but still a great time!

What a great weekend! Our weather was very temperamental but that didn’t stop these 2 amazing souls. Talk about willing participants. At the last minute, our mileage changed due to the weather and they killed it! First time backpackers and they completed 24 miles.

Grateful that Meagan and Lauren entrusted me to guide them and love seeing that sense of accomplishment at the end of the trip! It was an honor to spend Mother’s Day weekend with and

Sleeping in the woods is one of the top concerns I hear about in regards to backpacking. It’s definitely something to get used to. You are sure every sound at night is a bear! 🐻 (It’s usually just a squirrel!)

I found on my thru-hike that I craved campsites alone. I loved the solitude. I understand it’s not for everyone. Camping with others can also be rewarding and a great time to get to know fellow hikers.

Hailstorm Hiking Adventures wants to help remove the mystery of camping in the back country and help you feel comfortable on your own (or with others)! Reach out if you are looking for some guided adventure. We are ready for 2024 adventures!

My mission for founding Hailstorm Hiking Adventures was to help women connect to the outdoors and learn to be self-reliant in the backcountry. This weekend was my first guided trip and the two women that entrusted themselves with me were open books.

We did a 20 mile stretch of the AT over 3 days/2 nights. They each carried their own gear and water. Packs weighed about 28 lbs and there were no complaints….even thru the brutal uphill out of Caledonia! I showed them how to filter water, cook their food, and hang their food bag PCT style.

We hugged A LOT of trees! We relished in the beauty of the AT green tunnel. We laughed and shared stories. There might have been some twerking….🤷🏻‍♀️ We stunk by the end and had some aches and pains.

I am so grateful for these 2 beautiful women that believed in me to guide them. This is what I envisioned and cannot wait to continue to share backpacking with more women!

‘In my opinion, camping can be the greatest expression of free will, personal independence, innate ability, and resourcefulness possible today in our industrialized, urbanized existence. Regardless of how miserable or how splendid the circumstances, the sheer experience of camping seems a total justification for doing it.’
- Anne LaBastille

Still time to book an adventurous backpacking weekend this fall. Learn skills to help you feel confident in the backcountry.

Tick Prevention: Treating your clothes with permethrin can help reduce your chance for tick bites. It is especially important to treat socks and shoes since ticks are usually found closest to the ground.

For my AT and LT hikes, I use Permethrin Gear Spray. I treated my hiking clothes, backpack, and tent. I also carried a small bottle of Sawyer Picaridin Insect Repellant the entire treks since it also repels mosquitoes!
