16-YEAR-OLD GIRL PROMISED WORK, ONLY TO BE TRAPPED IN A HOTEL ROOM AND HAVE HER PASSPORT TAKEN AWAY.

In May of 2023, a 16-year-old Colombian citizen had been promised work in the Dominican Republic as a tattoo artist. However, upon her arrival, she was trapped in a hotel near the airport. A Venezuelan woman informed her that she would have to engage in prostitution to pay off the debts she had accumulated from her journey.

When the young girl refused, her passport was taken away and she was exploited by multiple men.

Making a daring escape, the 16-year-old approached two police officials at the airport in Santo Domingo, pleading for help. Fortunately, one of the officers had completed a training event hosted by O.U.R. and responded swiftly to the critical situation.

The local authorities contacted O.U.R., and now the survivor is receiving the support and resources she needs to ensure her safety and recovery. Additionally, our dedicated aftercare team is actively working on obtaining new documents for her while caring for her other needs.
