The U.S. is a collage—of cultures and ideals, of religious traditions and ways of life.

What better time to acknowledge that collage—the disparate and different identities that make us up—than during Independence Day!

This Saturday, from 11 a.m.–1 p.m., you can join Rosa Luz Catterall for a family-friendly art wellness workshop, where you’ll have the chance to make your very own collage! Art supplies are provided, so all you need to bring is your desire to make something special.

Let's create—together 💙

Have you ever had an intensely vivid dream? Do you remember it after you wake up?

Artist and 2023-24 Powder Mill Foundation Arts Fellow Jordan Fosheé ‘23 does, and he often uses them as inspiration for his paintings. He utilizes acrylic paint and unstretched canvas to depict and reassemble his dreams and visions. He knows it sounds crazy, but he asks big questions and manifests even bigger imagery and symbolism hidden within the work.

Fosheé‘s exhibition “Abyss,” a culmination of his work as a fellow at Marketview Arts, is now on view in Gallery Hall. There will be a reception and Q&A with the artist from 5-7pm on July First Friday (July 5) and the exhibition runs through Saturday, July 6.

To the artist, “Abyss,” embodies the horrible and tragic situations we as humans face, and what it means to come back from them. His work focuses on ancient history, mythology, and futurism all at overlapping points in space and time. The threads that tie us to one another, reflections on God, and the experience of the subconscious mind are all interconnected topics that sprout up within Jordan’s paintings. This exhibition is a timeline of his experimentation of different concepts throughout his formative years to his time as a Fellow at Marketview Arts, and the changes that come with it. He challenges his viewers to look inward and reflect on periods of “in-between” within their own lives.

CALL FOR ART
"Returning: An Alumni Exhibition"
Submissions due June 17, 2024

More than 6 years have passed since the inaugural Alumni Art Exhibition at Marketview Arts, a show of work by 28 Fine Art and Graphic Design alumni from York College of Pennsylvania. Much has changed since 2017, yet the dedication and perseverance has intensified as more creative graduates move through the programs.

The newest iteration of an alumni group show will highlight the recent works of graduates from the past 20 years. By showcasing our growing community of talented and hardworking professionals, we recognize the commitment our alumni have to craft, exploration, culture, and community.

Organized and curated by Interim Gallery Director for Marketview Arts and Fine Art alumna Ivy Rodgers ‘18, Returning: An Alumni Exhibition is focused on the variety of work our alumni have created since the 2020 pandemic. The exhibition will run from August 17–October 5, 2024, in Gallery Hall at Marketview Arts and there will be an opening reception during York Arts Week on Saturday, August 17, from 5–7 p.m.

Are you a YCP Fine Art or Graphic Design alum and would like to be a part of this exhibition? Please complete the interest form below by June 17.

Check out these five Juror’s Choice Award pieces from the YCASE Finalist Exhibition!

This weekend is the final one to see these pieces—along with the others in the Finalist Exhibition—in person. And indeed, what a joy it was to see so many young, bright scholars offer their art up for us all to see. Students both remixed long-held art techniques and ventured off on their own to create utterly innovative pieces. Their creations are a testament to how lucky York is to have a thriving art scene.

Thank you, high schoolers, for giving us your best and showing us what’s possible! We can’t wait to see you next year 💫

• The largest documented LGBTQ+ civil rights student demonstration on a college or university campus in the nation before Stonewall
• The first known openly transgender student government president in the nation
• The university students who had to sue in order to get recognition for their student organization
• Many more fascinating stories of LGBTQ+ campus activism right here in Pennsylvania

We can’t wait to see you at this important exhibition 🏳️‍🌈

Working on one image or medium is hard enough. Working across multiple images or mediums requires a special kind of artistic talent.

And yet, the three winners in the Printmaking or Mixed Media YCASE category managed to do just that! Kudos to Sophia, Makayla, and Makaylah for their fine work.

Congratulations to Jillian, Olivia, and Arianna for their amazing work 🖌

What two things do you need to inspire?

According to Lauren, Everitt, and Julia it’s a pencil and an imagination!

Check out these great pieces from the winners of the Drawing category for YCASE.

For a minute: let’s call attention to the attention to detail in these three winners for the YCASE Digital Media category! Color, scene, and shadow all confect into a story that the students manage to tell in a single image.

Congratulations to Eric, Audrey, and Molly on their great work!

This past Thursday, over 200 people gathered for the York Community Art Scholars Exhibition Awards Ceremony. High schoolers and their families browsed the walls of Gallery Hall, in Marketview Arts, bearing witness to the hundreds of hours of work that went behind their creations. They gestured to their pieces, narrating the stories behind them. They talked craft and discussed technique with parents, grandparents, friends, and family members. Most of all, they celebrated their contribution to York’s art scene.

Indeed, we all did. In a packed Appell Center we heard from YCP Deans, staff, and the College’s own Community Art Scholars about the important role that students have in creating artistic community. Together, they placed a spotlight on the talented students that are helping York thrive one piece at a time.

*

Throughout this week and next, we’ll showcase the winning pieces from each category: digital media, drawing, painting, photography, printmaking or mixed-media, three dimensional, and juror’s choice.

Thank you to the Shipley Family Foundation, the venues who volunteered their spaces, the high school art teachers, and most of all the students for making this year’s YCASE such a success!

Stay creative 🎉
