Overcoming the Fear of Falling

It’s a very scary situation to be in and you don’t want it to happen to you or a loved one!

I am talking about falling to the ground during the older years.
This could lead to a fractured hip, torn muscles, inability to get back up on your feet again and God forbid death!

The ground to the elderly sometimes can be like enemy territory.
Several of my patients in the past have reported taking a fall just from walking to the bathroom at night.

I also heard of a situation where someone had to lay next to their bed for several days after a fall because they could not get up and no one was around to help!

So, we are on a mission at my office to help as many people as we can to prevent a fall from occurring or prevent a fall from happening again.

In the past I have used parallel bars and various balance equipment to help, but nothing has come close to helping people as quickly as the Solo Step!

It’s a harness system that gives patients confidence to walk and to do balance activities without the fear of falling.

Now patients can push themselves beyond their comfort zone and start challenging the central nervous system to communicate to the legs again.

Unfortunately, once we sustain a fall we start to get closed off and do not walk as much; we fail to be as active and this further compound the problem.

My patient in this video struggled with going up curbs as she did not feel confident doing it without holding onto something.

You should have seen her when she first began, she struggled to step up onto a 4-inch step and required handhold assistance.

Master the Deadlift and Prevent Injury
Happy Veterans Day! We are all in need of exercise and learning how to exerise is the key to longevity in doing it! We have mastered teaching people how to exercise and move right in order to prevent injury. One of my favorite exercises now days is the deadlift; I use to hate this exercise because one its a leg exercise, and two I would fear hurting myself. But what is to fear honestly with this exercise? Learn to to it right, start off with light weight and learn some great exercises to improve your mobility and muscle recruitment and the exercise becomes a great training and functional tool to prevent injury. Pick up your kids, work in the yard, lift and hoist things throughout the day without fear of injury, because hey.. you have been training how to do it the right way with the deadilift. So get to the gym or to our office and start this amazing exercise and perfect it; you will feel great, your legs and back will start to feel stronger over a few weeks and you will be an injury preventing machine. Shoulder Stability
Progression of shoulder exercises everyone should do to keep the shoulder healthy! People get tight reaching behind the body, and weak in the back of the shoulder and upper back. A few exercise to strengthen the hip, specifically a muscle called the gluteus medius. These exercises will help improve alignment of the knee, hip, pelvis and lower back. If the side of the hip is weak the pelvis can become unleveled during walking, running and going up/down steps. When this happens the spine and leg become misaligned and can lead to pain. These exercises are very specific to this muscle and can be challenging at first. A good deal of attention needs to be placed on form and alignment. Keep the core tight, keep hips level and focus on keeping knee and foot pointed straight.
