LEÓN Y SU HISTORIA DE CALZADO

La ciudad de León está considerada como el emporio de los zapatos; sin embargo, los primeros talleres formales de producción de calzado eran lugares en los que “se trabajaba mucho y se sacaba poco”. En el año de 1645, con rudimentarias herramientas de madera, 36 familias, entre españolas, mulatas e indígenas, fabricaban los zapatos que posteriormente lucirían con orgullo los personajes más encumbrados del virreinato.

Pero un buen día llegó a León el ferrocarril, y con él la maquinaria para aligerar la carga de la producción del calzado y la oportunidad de exportar a los Estados Unidos, Texas fue el primer estado de la Unión Americana que compró masivamente los regios zapatos leoneses.

En la actualidad, en Guanajuato hay 3 mil 394 unidades económicas relacionadas con el sector calzado, de las cuales 85 por ciento son micro, pequeñas y medianas empresas. En León se elaboran artículos de piel: calzado, chamarras, cinturones, portafolios, bolsas, billeteras, ropa y ornamentación para la charrería con calidad de exportación y a excelente precio. Sus modernos centros comerciales se equiparan a los mejores de América Latina y se exhiben marcas de prestigio internacional.
