Our Story

The Northern Arizona University Yuma Branch Campus began offering classes in Yuma in 1988. Its first Campus Executive Officer was Dr. Augustus Santiago Cotera. In 1997, the construction of the NAU Yuma Academic Complex Building was completed. Then, in 2008, construction began on the Science and Research Building.

NAU Yuma is co-located with a two-year public community college, Arizona Western College, with which NAU has enjoyed a special relationship for 30 years. AWC and NAU Yuma share facilities and resources including classrooms, a library, bookstore, military and veterans services center, and use of a cafeteria and dormitories. Under the AWC2NAU joint admission program, freshmen from the community college may be admitted to NAU and begin receiving university services. In 2013, this unique partnership was rededicated by President Glenn Mayle of AWC and President John Haeger of NAU.

NAU Yuma was formally designated as a Branch Campus of Northern Arizona University by the Arizona Board of Regents in 2006. The campus was designated a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) in 2007 by the U.S. Department of Education in recognition of its branch campus status and the large proportion of Hispanic students being served.
