NOT JUST ABOUT FILMING

As a filming club, people always have a thought that all we do in On-set is filming. But besides that… we actually do lots of things…
Community? Definitely, creating filming requires more than just knowing how to set up a camera, which angle for a shot,.... That’s why we call ourselves a crew. Here in On-set you have time to share, to learn and to develop with others. Exactly, a community for people who share the same passion with you.
New skills? Why not? In On-set, besides filming we welcome all new ideas. No matter if you enjoy cinematography, videography, make-up, 3D, VFX or acting you will be a perfect fit for On-set. In fact, if you are good at it, you can turn it into a side job at On-set as well, as we are currently an official videography vendor for VinUniversity.
So only for On-set's projects huh? No, remember, these skills will go a long way with you. Why not take it up to a new level. Video assignments? Ace them with some sick-editing and grab yourself an EXCEL adward. Reflection videos after intern? Impress them with an amazing story and win that job opportunity. Here at On-set, we value individuals, and we expect all our members to grow and at least pick up a skills or two through your journey with us to use them in your own life.

[WeDIIP workshop series]

🎥 Not sure where to start? Overwhelmed with information? We've got you covered an amazing workshop series presented by On-set!

📍 WORKSHOP 01: Pre-production
Everybody has a story to tell, but the question is how to grasp the idea from your mind and translate it into picture form. There are no ideas that are bad, just those that failed in the ex*****on.

📍 WORKSHOP 02: Production
This is the most intense stage of production, which requires all of your skills, flexibility and perceptive abilities. It is also really fun, so its balanced out!

📍 WORKSHOP 03: Post-production
The last stage is also the most tiring one, especially when we start to lose motivation. Do you still have the strength to accompany us to the finish line and bring the audience the final fruit of the journey?

🎥 Each workshop will last for 1 hours including 20 minutes for Q&A, so feel free to prepare your questions regarding the competition or just about films in general.

Name: K. David Harrison

Identity: Beside being the Vice Provost of Academic Affairs, Prof. Harrison is also an experienced filmmaker. Throughout his career, and in his role as a National Geographic Explorer, Prof. Harrison has traveled the world to make films and write books on the topic of Endangered languages and Indigenous cultures. Some of his documentary films include the Emmy-nominated “The Linguists”, “One World, Many Voices: Endangered Languages and Cultural Heritage”, “Manx: Reviving a Language”; etc. Coming to WeDIIP as a judge, Professor Harrison will undoubtedly give a unique point of view from a professional filmmaker to this competition.

Personal sharing: “I am excited to serve as a judge and see what talented young filmmakers are producing. Film is not just a reflection of society, it is a vehicle for social change.”

Taxi Driver (1976) - Oh to be the man
----------------------
“I’m God’s lonely man,” He says as he takes on a dozen more passengers in the busy nightlife of New York. Travis exists day by day as a cab driver, witnessing all the lows of the streets. His disgust grows, and his worldview distorted. The sleepless man then found this love interest, only to be treated similar to those he deemed filthy.
Martin Scorsese’s work is nothing short of wonders. With “Taxi driver” he pried open the mind of a simple man driven by lust, pride, and anger. The story of a young, lost ex-marine desperate for a job to keep himself busy, his “conquest” of Betsy in the second Act, and a sweet and justified ending for our protagonist to end it all. Loneliness seems to be the main driving force, the feeling that Travis so desperately avoids. His intentions were pure, his heart is that of a child, yet he is trapped, unable to escape the stereotypes of his mind. Travis despises those on the streets, those who end up in the backseat of the cab, and yet he knows nothing beyond the filth he lives in.
The music changes according to how Travis feels towards the world. We get the warm jazzy beat as we accompany the driver and his mundane tasks, and things go out of tune just as Travis' heart starts to beat a little faster. Then, of course, the cab life returns when it needs to. A lesson can be learned, but sometimes it is ok to play the protagonist for a little longer.

Paprika (2006) - dream, but not too much

In a way, dreams reflect the deepest parts of the mind. Most people wake up and instantly forget what even happened in their sleep, and perhaps that happens for a reason. Kon Satoshi erased the thin veil between imagination and reality, showing how much one can achieve just by simply putting a little faith in their own Paprika.
The magical girl seemingly exists in the real world, interacting with the environment and the people in it. Pushed down by real life responsibilities and not being able to freely express herself, the Paprika lives her own life in a car, in a movie, under the water as a mermaid, and basically all that one could think of. Atsuko, on the other hand, lives her life researching dreams themselves, not much outside of that. Either one will play their role, but both will never be together at the same time. What does this reflect in our daily life? Not much, as nothing of certainty can be said. We live to fulfill expectations, play our roles to not attract too much attention, and hope one day it all pays off. We sleep to dream of things in the future, of favorable scenarios, of a life different from what we have right now, and wake up the next day grinding through responsibilities.
“Dream on”, as they say. In the end, to not have a dream is to be hollow, but to dwell on dreams is to embrace the illusions.
Life and death, night and day, man and woman, reality and…?

In the early days of the film's Netflix release, the Halloween party sequence involving a character costumed as a giant black tiger (and calling himself Black Panther (2018)) contained many spoken lines addressing Chadwick Boseman. Unfortunately, Boseman died January 2020, only a few months before the film's October debut. The remarks about Boseman appear to have been taken out and/or recorded after his death, whereas the original lines appeared in the closed captioning in a few occasions throughout the scenario.

Sloane's "Lester" ventriloquist doll (seen briefly in her apartment's ceiling fan) was based on Willie Tyler's main dummy, Lester. Although the toy version of Lester is still available, it was immensely popular in the 1970s and 1980s when it was sold from Mattel.

Tiffany Paulsen also wrote the screenplay for Nancy Drew, starring Emma Roberts (2007).

The ritual: self-reflection and the internal battle

Trauma is not a new concept in cinema. A group of friends who dragged one another into trouble is not a new concept in cinema. A creepy forest is not a new concept in cinema. A traumatized, conflicted group of friends hiking in the creepy woods in Sweden, however, is a potential plot point to explore.
David Brukner showcased guilt, regret, sorrow, and pain very well through a group of old friends taking a little detox trip. The heavy atmosphere is very clear from the start, but what stands out is subtle signs of conflict between the characters. Urban life may have steered them from talking things out, but there is no distraction once they step foot into the woods.
Though not implied, their life in the city likely follows the same cycle in the journey. Working towards "something" during the day, and at night they are met with nothing but thoughts and the ambiance.
The silent monologue sounds the loudest throughout the journey, and just like Luke, not all of us understand those words. Step by step, scene by scene, David tells an engaging healing process from trauma. The fictional aspects may have added little to the message, but it is open for interpretation for anyone.
