➕ The Nativity of St. John the Baptist ➕
Christians have long interpreted the life of John the Baptist as a preparation for the coming of Jesus Christ, and the circumstances of his birth, as recorded in the New Testament, are miraculous. John's pivotal place in the gospel is seen in the emphasis Luke gives to the announcement of his birth and the event itself, both set in prominent parallel to the same occurrences in the life of Jesus.

The sole biblical account of the birth of John the Baptist comes from the Gospel of Luke. John's parents, Zechariah or Zachary — a Jewish priest — and Elizabeth, were without children and both were beyond the age of child-bearing. During Zechariah's rotation to serve in the Temple in Jerusalem, he was chosen by lot to offer incense at the Golden Altar in the Holy Place.
The Archangel Gabriel appeared to him and announced that he and his wife would give birth to a child, and that they should name him John, a name which was unfamiliar in Zechariah and Elizabeth's families.
Acts 4:6 refers to a "John" (or "Jonathan", a name combining "John" with "Nathan" such that the "n" at the end of "John" is also used as the first "n" in "Nathan") among the high priests who challenged the apostles' preaching after Pentecost, so the name was not unknown within the wider priestly family.

However, because Zechariah did not believe the message of Gabriel, he was rendered speechless until the time of John's birth. At that time, his relatives wanted to name the child after his father, and Zechariah wrote, "His name is John", whereupon he recovered his ability to speak (Luke 1:5–25; 1:57–66). Following Zechariah's obedience to the command of God, he was given the gift of prophecy, and foretold the future ministry of Jesus this prophecy forming the text of the Benedictus canticle

THE TWELVE PROMISES OF THE SACRED HEART
In His communications with Sr. Margaret Mary, Our Lord also promised blessings to those who honor His Sacred Heart. These became known as the Twelve Promises of the Sacred Heart:
“I will give them all the graces necessary in their state of life.
“I will establish peace in their houses.
“I will comfort them in all their afflictions.
“I will be their secure refuge during life, and above all in death.
“I will bestow a large blessing upon their undertakings.
“Sinners shall find in my Heart the source and the infinite ocean of mercy.
“Tepid souls shall grow fervent.
“Fervent souls shall quickly mount to high perfection.
“I will bless every place where a picture of My Heart shall be set up and honored.
“I will give to priests the gift of touching the most hardened hearts.
“Those who shall promote this devotion shall have their names written in My Heart, never to be blotted out.
“I promise thee in the excessive mercy of My Heart that My all-powerful love will grant to all those who communicate on the First Friday in nine consecutive months the grace of final penitence; they shall not die in my disgrace nor without receiving their sacraments; My Divine Heart shall be their safe refuge in this last moment.”

May 13
🔸 FEAST OF OUR LADY OF FATIMA
Also known as
Lady of the Rosary (she called herself that when Lucia asked her name)

Commemorates the apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary to three children in Fatima, Portugal on the 13th of each month from May to October in 1917. Our Lady appeared to Lucia, age 9, Blessed Francisco Marto, age 8, and Blessed Jacinta Marto, age 6, while they were tending sheep; they described her as "a woman all in white, more brilliant than the sun", and her message was to do reparation for sins that offend God, and to pray constantly for the conversion of sinners. She asked for devotion to the Holy Trinity, and for praying the Rosary daily for world peace. Word spread, and by the final apparition on 13 October, 70,000 people showed up to witness the Lady and the sign that she had promised; they witnessed the sun make three circles and zigzag around in the sky.

Our Lady of Fatima, Pray for us! 🙏♥️😇

Today is the Feast of St. Joseph.
St Joseph was caught up at every moment by the mystery of the Incarnation. Not only physically, but in his heart as well, Joseph reveals to us the secret of a humanity which dwells in the presence of mystery and is open to that mystery at every moment of everyday life. In Joseph, faith is not separated from action. His faith had a decisive effect on his actions. Paradoxically, it was by acting, by carrying out his responsibilities, that he stepped aside and left God free to act, placing no obstacles in his way. Joseph is a “just man” because his existence is “ad-justed” to the word of God.

Origen writes that “Joseph understood that Jesus was superior to him even as he submitted to him, and, knowing the superiority of his charge, he commanded him with respect and moderation. Everyone should reflect on this: frequently a lesser man is placed over people who are greater, and it happens at times that an inferior is more worthy than the one who appears to be set above him. If a person of greater dignity understands this, then he will not be puffed up with pride because of his higher rank; he will know that his inferior may well be superior to him, even as Jesus was subject to Joseph”.

We are again to begin our 40-day journey of Lent this coming Wednesday. Lent is not just having ashes on our foreheads and suffer a little fasting on Ash Wednesday and be back with rigors on Good Friday! These coming 40 days were set by the Church so that all her members would make a concentrated effort to renew their own spiritual vigor. Prayer, fasting and almsgiving provide an opportunity for us to reappraise our goal and direct course.

With this in mind, we have prepared small daily steps to provide a practice and a prayer for each day during this Lent. Each step will consist of three parts: 1) a though worth pondering on during the day, selected from the Liturgy of the day's Mass; 2) a resolution or practice flowing from this thought; and 3) a related prayer which can serve as a reminder of both thought and resolution, if repeated frequently during the day.

Lent is not just like any other ordinary days of the year. Let's make it different and let us avail of its spiritual fruits, so we can present ourselves to Our Lord on Easter renewed and strengthened members of his Mystical Body.

THINGS WE NEED TO KNOW ABOUT ASH WEDNESDAY
1. What is Ash Wednesday?
Ash Wednesday is the day that Lent begins
The name comes from the fact that a particular rite is always celebrated on this Wednesday in which the faithful have ashes put on their foreheads.

2. What does the putting on of ashes symbolize?
The use of ashes is a survival from an ancient rite according to which converted sinners submitted themselves to canonical penance.
The act of putting on ashes symbolizes fragility and mortality, and the need to be redeemed by the mercy of God.
Far from being a merely external act, the Church has retained the use of ashes to symbolize that attitude of internal penance to which all the baptized are called during Lent.
The faithful who come to receive ashes should be assisted in perceiving the implicit internal significance of this act, which disposes them towards conversion and renewed Easter commitment.

3. How does the distribution of ashes take place?
Then the priest places ashes on the head of all those present who come to him, and says to each one:
Repent, and believe the Gospel.
Or:
Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.
Meanwhile an antiphon or another appropriate chant is sung.

4. Is there a particular way the ashes should be put on people's heads?
Many Catholics see this practice as a means of publicly showing their faith and leave the smudge on their forehead throughout Ash Wednesday.
In other countries, such as Spain, Italy and parts of Latin America, the prevailing custom seems to be sprinkling fairly dry ashes on the crown of the head. But even within these geographical areas, both customs are practiced and there may be other legitimate traditions as well.

5. How long do you leave the ashes on?
There is no rule about this. It is a matter of personal decision based on the individual's own inclinations and circumstances.
The ashes can be left on until they wear off naturally or they can be washed off or wiped off when the individual chooses.

6. Is Ash Wednesday a Holyday of Obligation?
No. There is no obligation to attend Mass.
However, Ash Wednesday is a penitential day and it (together with Good Friday) is one of two days of the year on which fasting and abstinence are required.

JOIN IN EPIPHANY CHOIR OF ST JOSEPH'S CATHEDRAL IN HANOI
TUYỂN THÀNH VIÊN CA ĐOÀN EPIPHANY - GIÁO XỨ CHÍNH TÒA HÀ NỘI

"Joy, sorrow, tears, lamentation, laughter—to all these music gives voice, but in such a way that we are transported from the world of unrest to a world of peace, and see reality in a new way, as if we were sitting by a mountain lake and contemplating hills and woods and clouds in the tranquil and fathomless water.”

—Albert Schweitzer (1875-1965)

It is hard to believe that the lazy days of summer are drawing to a close. We look forward to another year of collaboration with the choir - Epiphany angels, ministerial team and congregation of this lovely community.

Each year, we issue a sincere and open invitation to join the Epiphany Choir. So this year, with a nod to our Father Anthony and Father Joseph, here are our top reasons to join:
1. First of all, we are a community of normal people who connect together to serve the Church parish by singing. We are not singers :))
2. We laugh a lot. Really
3. We care about each other
4. Even if you are rusty or have been away for a long time, you are welcome!
5. We pray together.
6. We are diverse in age and stage and respect one another.
7. We express our faith through the preparation and sharing of music.
8. We honor the worship service and enjoy the privilege of participating.
9. God hears our prayers and smiles with us.

The Epiphany Choir continue to ring with joy and abandon and I we are pleased to work with the group again. If you are interested in ringing the gleaming handbells, feel free to contact me. We meet on Thursday evenings, and our schedule is fluid and accommodating!
Our English Mass begin at every 11:30 AM on Sunday and Practicing on every 20:30 PM on Thursday on Saint Joseph's CATHEDRAL in Hanoi.

Today is the liturgical commemoration of Saints Joachim and Anne, parents of Our Lady, and therefore, grandparents of Jesus.
This occasion makes us think of the subject of education which has an important place in the pastoral work of the Church. In particular, it invites us to pray for grandparents, who, in the family, are the depositories and often witnesses of the fundamental values of life.
The educational task of grandparents is always very important, and it becomes even more so when, for various reasons, the parents are unable to provide their children with an adequate presence while they are growing up.
Let us entrust to the protection of St Anne and St Joachim all the grandparents of the world and bestow on them a special blessing. May the Virgin Mary who according to a beautiful iconography - learned to read the Sacred Scriptures at her mother Anne's knee, help them always to nourish their faith and hope at the sources of the Word of God.

Blessed Feast of the Visitation of Mary!

*Mary arose * and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Judah.
*Mary entered * into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elizabeth.
*When Elizabeth heard * the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb, and she was filled with the Holy Ghost. Alleluia.
*Blessed art thou among women, * and blessed is the Fruit of thy womb.
*As soon as * the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy. Alleluia.
*All generations shall call me blessed, * for God hath regarded the lowliness of His hand-maiden.

On Saturday, June 25, we celebrate the Memorial of the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary, following the June 25 celebration of the Feast of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. The memorial is described as "a celebration of the complex visceral relationship of Mary with her Son’s work of salvation: from the Incarnation, to his death and resurrection, to the gift of the Holy Spirit.” (Dir. on Popular Piety and the Liturgy)

Immaculate Heart of Mary, “invoke upon us from God a heart completely renewed that loves God with all its strength and serves mankind as you did.” (Pope Benedict XVI, Act of Entrustment and Consecration of Priests to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Church of the Most Holy Trinity - Fátima, Wednesday, 12 May 2010)

THREE NATIVITIES CELEBRATED BY CATHOLICS

Usually we celebrate the feast of saints on the anniversary of their death because that’s the beginning of their eternal life (dies natalis). But there are 3 birthdays that the Catholic Church celebrates. We all know why Jesus’ birth is so important. But why the emphasis on Mary and John the Baptist?

The feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary is celebrated each year on the 8th of September. Usually it is the custom of the church to celebrate the feast day of a saint on the date of their death as this is truly their "die natalis", the day remembered as their birth into everlasting happiness.

The Solemnity of the Nativity of John the Baptist is celebrated each year every 24th of June. On the day of his nativity, then, we honor John the Baptist, who was filled with the Holy Spirit while in his mother's womb, was chosen by God to herald His Son, lived a model life of holiness and was martyred for his faith.
