A study published ashttp://www.pnas.org/content/100/15/9096.full.pdf seems to show that babies will profit a lot from direct contact with speakers of foreign languages.

When 9-month old babies play with and listen to native speakers only for relatively short periods of time, they will later be much better equipped to understand and produce the sounds of that foreign language more correctly.

So if you want your children to understand and speak English perfectly, maybe you should let them play with foreigners already when they are less than 1 year old...

The IELTS Study Group will meet again at the Language Café on Saturday, 4 to 6 pm. This week’s topic will be “Dedication and coercion in contemporary education”. This is an open group, so everybody can join.

Reading books can be a great way to pick up new vocabulary, see grammar in action and develop your understanding of a language. The key to success is choosing the right book for you. In this event we want to talk about what and how to read and what learning methods to apply.

This weekend the IELTS Study Group will meet again in the Language Café at 4 pm. This is an open group, so everyone can join. On Saturday they want to focus on speaking, on Sunday on writing.

Many parents send their children to study English in extra courses, but soon they find out that there it’s not much different from school: grammar and cramming in big classes, but not enough time for conversation and speaking practice.
At the Language Cafe we want to be different. Every Saturday and Sunday morning (from 8 to 10 am) we offer a place for youngsters to play games and talk to each other so they can improve their communication skills.

So true: “One reason that I’m not a fan of audio courses and pure-input methods of learning a language is that they encourage people to embrace their shyness. It just seems “easier” to stay at home or have to do nothing more than turn on your TV or iPod.

While these methods do have advantages for learning the basics of a language, they are absolutely useless when it comes to actually practising it. Language involves communication – sorry to point out the obvious… but you kind of need another person for that.”

Last night we had another interesting evening in the Language Cafe. Nic from England talked about his life and answered lots of questions from our guests. Many people enjoyed the event and it got very crowded.

Last night we had Cris from Brazil and Nic from England as foreign guests in the Language Café. Cris talked about the culture of his country and answered many questions from interested guests. Next Saturday Nic will talk about England, the Queen, the famous English weather, football and many other topics.
