Some will place you in cheap concrete flophouses hastily built by Hanoi prospectors, but others really do offer rooms in wonderfully refurbished traditional Hmong houses. These latter are widely marketed as “homestays”, but are often simply just glorified bed & breakfasts. Glorified bed & breakfasts can be fantastic, however travelers seeking connection may find the chance to experience the Hmong lifestyle lacking. Are you coming to Sapa for trekking? We can start the moment we meet. It’s a 4 hour trek to Hau Thao village from Sapa’s most famous meeting point, the French Catholic Sapa Stone Church. Buses from Lào Ca station (the end of the line where all trains from Hanoi arrive) all stop here. Otherwise we can take a xe ôm (motorcycle taxi) straight to Ger’s house and plan treks further afield. Sapa offers trekkers many possibilities.

The price is approximately $30-35 per person for two days guided trekking, one night’s sleep, and all meals. This is Sapa Valley’s average going rate as of June 2019. Rates are negotiable for longer stays and larger groups. You are saving money because you are bypassing agents. Everything you spend will go directly to the Black Hmong families who live in the valley that you are visiting. This is thoughtful eco (as in economic) tourism.
