The emergence of the Funj Sultanate completely altered the existing power dynamics between the Ottoman Empire and Ethiopia in the 16th-18th centuries. The Funj established their capital city at Sinnar, a port along the banks of the Blue Nile in what is now northeastern Sudan, where they maintained tight control over a flourishing trade of gold and slaves. Under Funj’s rule, Islam spread and it is still the dominant religion in modern-day Sudan. For nearly 300 years, the Funj presence in the region frustrated Ottoman attempts at southern expansion until they succumbed to an invasion led by Egypt’s viceroy, Muhammad Ali. Qarmatian Empire
In 930 CE, the #Qarmatians invaded #Mecca and stole the sacred #BlackStone ⚫ which had been placed in the #Kaaba by the Prophet Muhammad himself. It was believed to have been sent from Heaven✨ and symbolized the unity of the #Islamic faith. For the Qarmatians to steal this sacred item was a tremendous offense. For over twenty years, the Black Stone remained in the Qarmatian Empire until the Qarmatians agreed to return it to the people of Mecca in exchange for a large ransom. This event is still remembered today, and serves as a reminder of the power of the Qarmatian Empire. To commemorate this event, we are hosting a live Facebook event **TODAY @ 3 PM EST** on the Qarmatian Empire and the Abduction of the Sacred Black Stone.
