Hi I’m Ross McKelvie 👋

Teacher, international volleyball player, Online coach and eater 😂

As a teacher of Physical Education naturally I am an extremely active person and always have been from a young age. In the last 3 years I have chosen to pursue beach volleyball semi professionally and I am extremely lucky to have a school which supports me in doing this whilst still working full time 🫶🏻

This year however I have taken a year off from teaching to pursue playing beach volleyball full time 🏐

This took me to New Zealand where I lived with my girlfriend Alice for 6 months and got to train with and learn from elite players and coaches as well as giving me the opportunity to focus on my coaching business 🙏🏻

In the last 6 months I’m not afraid to admit that my coaching game has levelled up and the service I offer has improved dramatically. Primarily this is because I am now able to offer my clients so much more than a weekly check in and a programme to follow 📈

Since coming back from from NZ I have also spent time coaching beach volleyball in Portugal with Deep Dish Beach Camps which is always an incredible experience and is something I’ve done for the last few years even when teaching ☀️

Over the coming months I plan to continue building my online business, client base and community whilst playing events in the UK and in Europe which again I feel extremely lucky to be able to do 🍀

The photos above are a brief snap shot into some of the highlights of the last year of my life and are also ones that I feel sum me up as a person 📸

5️⃣ mental models and mindset shifts you can make to help you become more successful when it comes to chasing down your goals

1️⃣ “Where there’s resistance there’s change”

Ever do something new or challenging and you get that feeling of discomfort? That is simply a sign that your pushing yourself and that you are growing and evolving. Just as you would use resistance training to grow a muscle group, you can do the same with your mindset by undertaking new challenging tasks or attempting to creating new habits.

2️⃣ “Process over outcome”
A person who goes to the gym because they love training and they feeling they get afterwards will still be training years after the person who trains to look a certain way or to achieve the before and after photo.

The problem with being outcome focused is that once you get there it feels a bit underwhelming and you realise it was all of the steps that you took to get there that were the real achievements.

Think about a greyhound chasing a rabbit at the track. Do they do it because they catch the rabbit at the end? No. They do it because they love it.

3️⃣ “negativity bis effects us all”
Negative feelings and emotions are 10x more powerful than positive ones. As humans we will naturally lean towards a glass half full mentality. This is normal, just be aware.

4️⃣ “Comparison is the thief of joy”
The grass is always greener? There’s always someone doing better than you? By comparing yourself to others you are missing out on all the great things you have going on in your own life. Comparison is tough especially when it comes to looking at things through the lens of social media, you only see what people want you to see and don’t know what’s going on in the background.

5️⃣ “All or nothing mentality” will not serve you. Too many people quit or want to start again from scratch after any slight pothole in the road. You don’t need to achieve perfection to achieve your goals, doing “pretty good” for the majority of the time is usually good enough, so let’s start there.

When is the best time to seek online coaching?

For me it is sometime along that horizontal line in the middle of the graph

At this point you have been training for over a year

You have seen those “beginner gains” happen where because you’ve gone from no stimulus to stimulus you see so rapid improvement in the weights you are lifting and how you look in the mirror

During this time of you have done things correctly you will also have become proficient in basic but key lifts such as squat, deadlift and presses

At this point in my opinion most people are going to need some direction, someone (it may not be me) to take you to that next level, away from the basics

For most people the answer is a structured and progressive programme designed specifically to suit them, their ability and their goals

The question is how long will you sit on that plateau line before you take action?

Why I do what I do 🔥🙏🏻

As some of you may know I started this business almost 2 years ago to make money to fund my beach volleyball journey

Every penny I have made in that time has gone towards paying for petrol, accommodation and flights for the training I do and the tournaments I play in at home and abroad as I receive very limited financial support due to the sport being so small within Scotland

At the weekend myself and my partner Callum achieved our second European medal on the sand together which for us is a massive achievement

So this post is just a quick thank you to all who follow me and interact with my account, and an even bigger thank you to all my in person and online clients both past and present, you have supported me more than you know 🖤💚
