The best part, eggs are versatile and your baby can literally eat #EggsAnytime. Itā€™s a fact of life and as Dietitians, we donā€™t shy away about talking ā€˜bout poop! Before we get into things, if youā€™re new here - weā€™re Jess and Nita - two friends, Dietitians, and moms of littles. We created Happy Healthy Eaters to support parents in this wild but wonderful time of feeding babies and toddlers with practical, research science-based tips! Okay, back to the poop. Here are a few things you can expect to notice when your baby starts solids: šŸ’© frequency - they may poop more or less šŸ’© texture - poops may get harder or softer šŸ’© undigested food - youā€™ll likely see bits of food šŸ’© colour - for example, blueberries can turn their poop almost black! šŸ’© PRO TIP: if youā€™re using cloth diapers, youā€™ll want to get a diaper sprayer and drop the poop into your toilet because it doesnā€™t wash out nicely in the washing machine anymore! If you find your baby is experiencing some straining or constipation, then youā€™re going to want to check out our blog post called ā€œHelp! My baby is constipated after starting solids!ā€ In this article we share how to tell if your baby is constipated, when to be concerned, and 7 non-medicinal strategies to help your baby poop! Share this post with a friend who needs this :)

Have you noticed this? If I put food on a stick, the appeal increases dramatically for my kids! Last weekend we were at my friendā€™s for a BBQ. She served pork souvlaki skewers and I didnā€™t think one of my kids would eat any but he gobbled up the whole skewer full of meat! In general my kids are huge fruit fans but they havenā€™t yet learned to like guava. Hereā€™s my tip for picky eaters - make fruit kabobs using mostly fruits your kids already know and like but then throw in a couple of pieces of fruit that they havenā€™t warmed up to yet! I wish I had covertly videoed it but today I made fruit kebabs and added some guava pieces. One of my kids surprised me by taking a small bite of it before setting it aside. If I had just placed some guava slices in front of him, Iā€™m 99% confident he wouldnā€™t have even touched it. Novelty can lead to curiosity. Curiosity can lead to an open mind. An open mind can lead to trying new foods! Okay, I just read this caption over and I definitely overused the exclamation marks but Iā€™m going to leave them in - Iā€™m pretty excited about this small win :) Follow us, two registered dietitian moms, for more tips on feeding your kiddos! p.s. The skewers can be quite sharp. Use your judgment for when you feel your child is old enough/responsible enough to have them. #pickyeaters #fruitkebabs #foodonsticks #feedingkids

Many people are surprised to learn thisā€¦ Meat is now on the list of recommended FIRST foods for babies! One of the top nutritional needs babies have when starting solids is to get more iron, which is why high iron foods are recommended as babyā€™s first foods. Not only is meat high in iron but one of the types of iron found in meat is considered highly bioavailable. This simply means that the body is able to digest and absorb more of it. Okay, so now that you understand the benefit of offering meat to your beginner eater but, if youā€™re like most parents we work with, you might be wondering exactly HOW to prepare and offer it safely! Weā€™ve got you covered. Itā€™s not as hard as you may think! Follow us for more baby feeding tips! https://happyhealthyeaters.com/when-can-babies-start-eating-meat/

While there isnā€™t one ā€œright way,ā€ to go about things, this is the strategy we use in our homes when it comes to sugar [sponsored by the Canadian Sugar Institute] When shopping for core foods like yogurt, cereal or pasta sauce, we like to check the ingredient list and look for low or no sugar added options. That way, their bliss point for sugar is low so when we offer foods like candy, cake or ice cream itā€™s more satisfying! And yes, contrary to popular belief we absolutely serve these sweet foods to our kids. Check out our blog post that teaches you how to look for sugar in food, and which types to be more mindful of! (hint: you donā€™t need to worry about šŸ‡ oršŸ„›) https://happyhealthyeaters.com/how-to-spot-sugar/ Again, this is just one game plan! šŸ‘¶šŸ¦· We think of allllll the things like buying the right high chair, getting cute feeding gear, and learning about starting solids...then your baby pops their first tooth, and then what? [sponsored post with Manitoba Dental Association] What about keeping your baby's gums and teeth healthy? Weā€™re Dietitians so itā€™s a no-brainer that we believe nutrition is key in those early years, but so is setting the stage for healthy oral care! Take notes, because hereā€™s what you really need to know: šŸŖ„If your baby doesnā€™t have teeth, their gums still need some TLC. A simple wipe with a clean, damp rag after solids is easy peasy. šŸ‘¶ And when those tiny teeth do make their grand entrance, youā€™ll want to use a soft-bristled toothbrush and a tiny grain of rice-sized dab of fluoride toothpaste. Thatā€™s it! Building in an oral care routine sets the stage for good oral hygiene and prevents early childhood tooth decay. Healthy teeth is a part of overall health, and weā€™re #hereforit. šŸ¦· To our #FriendlyManitoban mamas, Your Manitoba Dentist is your partner in parenting when it comes to oral careā€“reach out to someone for more support! #OralHealthMonth #ManitobaDentist #BabyOralHealth #HealthyHabits #MomTips #BabyTeeth #TeethingBaby #WinnipegMom #BabyMilestones #NewMom #ParentingTips #Fluoride #Teeth #OralCare #DentalHealth #ManitobaDentist #DentalHygiene #DentalWellness #SmileManitoba
