Exclusive interview:
Franciacorta, 1906 - The oldest winery

Unspoken words, secrets and historic traditions started back in 1906, are still maintained by the same family who founded a piece of Italian history. Almost twelve decades ago, the De Filippo winery contributed to found Franciacorta and became the first winery to produce, in the 60’s, the “Franciacorta Brut” and later, in the 70’s the very first “Riserva”, today known as “Saten”.

Every single bottle is looked after and individually turned by hand by senior members of the De Filippo family. No mechanical invention could ever replace the knowledge and the wisdom acquired over the years of a lifetime

Mr. Domenico De Filippo also defined the guidelines and standards required for the Franciacorta denomination. History is the story of the past and a form of collective memory, but History is also the story of who we are, where we come from, and 1906 is a milestone which started a tradition still followed and valued by the De Filippo family.

Traditions

Another marvelous fragment of this undiscovered tradition is offered by the walls of a Roman Castrum, where every single bottle is still individually turned by hand, one after the other under the supervision of the De Filippo family members.

Bottles are stored in the corridors of the castle, and each and every single one of them is looked after and turned by hand by senior members of the De Filippo family. No mechanical invention could ever replace the knowledge and the wisdom acquired over the years of a lifetime. Like an ancient clockwork across decades and centuries, the tradition of Franciacorta winemaking in the De Filippo winery sees each single bottle individually followed while aging.

De Filippo, founded back in 1906 is the oldest winery in Franciacorta, and Mr. Domenico De Filippo, is not only keeping this tradition alive but is also hand turning every single bottle creating a product which is simply unique. Traditions and knowledge have been kept alive over the years generating an extraordinary selection of products, and limited number of exclusive bottles, which are left to sleep inside a piece of history.

The cellars of the De Filippo winery are located in the foundations of the castle, protected by bricks and stones assembled by Roman Legions under their commanders, during a moment in history which saw the Empire facing the Barbaric invasions. And precisely those very same walls and secret corridors are used to store this exclusive selection of products, tradition and flavors. Wine bottles are left to rest inside the Roman Castrum which preserves a natural and constant temperature and humidity and also shelter the barrels and the bottles of this precious gift the earth provides.

Mr. Domenico De Filippo

There is a hidden story behind Franciacorta, there are traditions and unrevealed skills which have not been forgotten and are still valued and treasured in a unique place which is the oldest winery of Franciacorta.
