Discover the fascinating origins of Bierock, a yeast roll filled with a savory mixture of beef, cabbage, and onions. This culinary gem has a rich heritage, originating in Russia, where it was known as a pirogi. It then made its way to the German settlers along the banks of the Volga River, who transformed it into the beloved Bierock we know today. In the 1870s, German Mennonite immigrants brought this cherished tradition to the American Great Plains, where it has continued to capture the hearts and appetites of many.

During this class, you'll have the opportunity to delve into the historical roots of Bierock while also getting hands-on experience crafting these delectable pastries. From preparing the yeast dough to mastering the art of filling and shaping the pockets, you'll gain insights into the traditional techniques and flavors that make Bierock a beloved culinary classic.

Join us as we celebrate Bierock's cultural significance and delicious tastes in a class that promises to be educational and flavorsome.

We wish everyone joy and warmth through the winter season. The holidays to us is giving and appreciating what is already there: family, friends, and our health.

In the spirit of giving, we've restocked our items Dough Re Mi with everything being "pay what you can". Items include our small batch tea blends, salves, and jam.

In any time of the year, remember your presence is the greatest present to give.

Happy Holidays,
Ylet and Rose of Green River School

Children and adults experienced the joy of baking together in Betty's Sweet and Savory Scone class.

Our philosophy as parents is to learn and grow together. No parent is perfect, and that is okay. Both children and adults have the total capacity to reach their full potential. Through meeting new challenges and gaining new skills, we grow as individuals and a community and, as a result, grow as parents. Our vision is to live in a world where adults can begin to heal themselves and start building the most fertile soil for our children and future generations.

We at Green River School believe everyone has something valuable to share in our community, whether it be stories, skills, or their presence. Because of the busyness of life, it is often difficult to slow down and find a moment to listen with our ears and hearts. We put off checking on our family, friends, neighbors, and equally important, ourselves. If learning something new seems scary or there isn't enough time, but there's a voice urging you to explore new pastures, we invite you to join us and learn the basics of upholstery with Diane Kimble.

It's not officially West Virginia day, but we at Green River School felt the need to highlight some of the characteristics that make us all Appalachian.

𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲

For us, as we balanced parenthood and work while organizing this class; we somehow found the energy and light to push through. The belief everyone has untapped potential kept us moving forward.

For Betty, who squeezed this workshop into her already busy life as a mother, fire breather, and commercial baker. Humorous and patient, Betty guided her nervous students as they prepared their first sourdough loaf.

And lastly, for the students, who overcame uncertainty and entrusted themselves with learning something new.

Many thanks,

Ylet and Rose of Green River School

Knotweed, notorious for invading river banks and gardens, is both edible and medicinal. It's typically used as a "gamey" substitute for rhubarb in pies, or can lean towards savory in meat dishes. Green River School is hosting its first Wild Tea Party. In this event, we'll explore herbal teas of North America. With a long history of Native American use, who shared the information with early European settlers, a number of these native plants were consumed (and still are by some) from winter into spring as health tonics, and similar to our modern-day coffee, there was the early North American caffeinated beverage. Come dive with us ⌇⌇⌇ into North America's forgotten tea history, and its present state, and take part in its revival.
