Example: If you just ate cookies that were in the break room, don’t start shaming and berating yourself over it. You’ve already eaten the cookies. Not only is berating yourself mean and harsh, it doesn’t carry any benefit, either. You just end up feeling worse. (And feeling worse usually leads to more eating.) Instead, say something to yourself like, “I’ve eaten cookies that I didn’t really want. This is a pattern for me. I’m willing to give myself some time and space to figure out what is going on.” Next, get curious. It’s as simple as, “I wonder why I keep eating cookies that I don’t really want to eat. What is going on just before I eat? What happened? What was I thinking? How was I feeling?” Finally, commit to trying something different next time. It could be going for a quick walk, or stepping aside and breathing intentionally, or texting a friend. My coaching program provides my clients with the structure and support to build awareness and acceptance, while also making life-style changes that will support sustainable weight loss. I think it’s archaic and harmful to use food as reward or punishment, earning it through our actions or withholding it because of our actions. Choose to eat for nourishment , pleasure, in celebration, but don’t use it as an incentive to do anything. Plan your meals and enjoy them. Have autonomy around your food and eating. It’s the way to have a healthy relationship with food and yourself. What do you absolutely love to eat? Without hesitation or reservation? I love my joy foods. I plan them with enthusiasm and anticipation. I eat them slowly and intentionally, savoring every bite. There is no guilt, shame, or remorse about eating them. They are all part of the plan. I eat joy foods because they bring me such pleasure. I don't binge on them. I don't obsess over them. I simply enjoy eating them. What foods do you usually "feel bad" for eating? There's no need to feel bad. Plan for them and thoroughly enjoy them.
