Trying to be “perfect” usually causes more harm than good, especially when it comes to our food and eating behaviors when eating with ADHD.

In our daily lives, this can manifest in ways such as:

🍽letting the sink pile up with dirty dishes
🥨restricting our dietary intake to foods that we label as “”good””
👀feeling like we can’t control our eating
🧠sacrificing our mental health to achieve perfection at work or school

And a million and one more ways that we try to be perfect, realize we can’t do something perfectly, and give up entirely.

Do any of these things resonate with you? ✋🏻 If so, this next part is important: it is completely okay to stop trying to be perfect. I hereby give you permission to let go of your all-or-nothing, black-and-white thinking, and invite you to step into the gray.

If you’re looking for more support understanding your neurodivergent brain, and challenging diet culture while you’re at it, check out my my monthly Eating with ADHD® membership program, Neurished! We offer live workshops (and replays), an ADHD Foundations course, a private community, access to your 2 fave ADHD dietitians), and SO. MANY. AMAZING. RESOURCES!! 🧀 Needing some snack-tastic inspo this week??🥨

🏃🏽‍♀️quick
🦄and can provide more novelty throughout the day.

These things help make it easier to eat when executive dysfunction gets in the way.🍓

Does the word “consistency” also send a shiver down your spine?😬

🧠 Oh boy is it easy for us ADHDers to fall into perfectionism through our all-or-nothing thinking patterns - I know I’m not alone in this happening A LOT.

🧨 So, if something isn’t just-so, or exactly what we planned/expected/hoped for, or we fall short of the bar we set (which is usually set unreasonably high btw), we end up thinking the thing is completely wrong, that nothing went right, that the outcome is a total failure, or that we suck at life because we can’t ever seem to reach that damn bar!!!

😢 When we are constantly aiming for an A+, we are going to end up feeling shame, frustration, disappointment… and we beat ourselves up for not being or doing better. And over time, that takes its toll.

👉🏼 So, I challenge you to aim for a C+ today. Notice what shows up, even just thinking about that. What if you released the pressure, even just a small amount? What would that look like? Share your thoughts in the comments!

We’re THRILLED to have speak around this topic next week in our GUEST EXPERT WORKSHOP: Mountain Peaks And Beach Days- Goal-Setting with the Unpredictable Nature of ADHD Energy Levels on our Neurished Monthly Membership.

✨P.S. NEURISHED, (my Eating with ADHD® monthly membership program) can help you challenge perfectionism! Eating with ADHD®

Photos from The ADHD RD's post 08/01/2024

FACT: it isn’t easy eating with ADHD, especially when it feels like an uphill battle to nourish our minds and bodies!

ADHDers are more likely to not eat enough, not eat consistently, not get variety, & not satisfy appetite.

WHY? Because executive dysfunction is REAL!

We can easily find ourself lost in a task, in a spiral, in our mind, and disconnected from our body and all the natural hunger cues it whispers for us to eat and nourish ourselves throughout the day.

Even when we know better and earnestly want to meet our bodies needs, it can feel dang near impossible to remember the steps on steps on steps it feels like it takes to feed ourselves!

We have totally been there, felt that, and GET IT.

We’re human, we’re imperfect, we don’t have all the answers on our own, and sometimes, we really need more support and community to work through these funks and patterns.

If you’re looking for more support understanding your neurodivergent brain, and challenging diet culture while you’re at it, check out my my monthly Eating with ADHD® membership program, Neurished! Happy 2024 everyone!!! 🎉🙌🏼🍾

Diet culture wants you to make resolutions around shrinking your body. This happens every single year. “Time to reset” because it didn’t stick last year, or the year before that, or the year before that.

Well guess what? Your body DOES NOT need a reset!

If you have ADHD, you might be familiar with some of the sneaky ways diet culture uses ADHD symptoms to justify becoming part of the daily routine. Allowing these thoughts and behaviors will actually lead to worsening executive function, increased impulsivity, and more emotional dysregulation. In other words, dieting exacerbates ADHD symptoms.

How can you let go of diet culture and practice gentle nutrition in 2024 in order to care for your body and your brain? 🧠

👉🏼Did you know that Neurished, (my Eating with ADHD® monthly membership program) is a non-diet, size-inclusive space for ADHDers who are looking to heal their relationship with food and their brain so they can neurish themselves the ADHD way!?

✨We have workshops, body doubling, guest experts, resources, course modules, and a growing community of non-diet ADHDers, ready to support you in your journey!

💥Needing a Dopamine boost in your ADHD noggin?🧠 Look no further than my go-to DOPAMINE MENU!📃

🔧What’s a Dopamine Menu you ask? Also called a “dopamenu”, this tool for ADHDers is a visual guide that categorizes various dopamine stimulating activities into appetizers, entrees, and desserts, mirroring a restaurant menu.

🧬Dopamine, a neurotransmitter crucial for motivation and focus, is often deficient in the brains of ADHDers. The purpose of the dopamine menu is to make it easier to engage in dopamine stimulating activities whenever more dopamine is needed.

🍪These activities range from small, easily accessible options to more significant, higher-effort endeavors with the main purpose of GENERATING MORE DOPAMINE whenever needed.

😓Decision fatigue is so real! The overwhelm of having to think of a dopamine activity in the moment can be a major barrier to doing anything at all, and often ends up with avoidance and stuckness.

🏆Starting with an appetizer, a quick and easy activity, can initiate a positive feedback loop, leading to increased motivation for either 1) more significant tasks, or 2) higher level dopamine activities.

✏️What would you add to YOUR Dopamine Menu? Share in the comments!

🎁Let’s gift ourself the PERMISSION to enjoy all the yummy foods this Holiday Season!

One of the most important tenets of intuitive eating is getting pleasure from food! After all, isn’t that what all these holiday gatherings are about - enjoying the company of loved ones and celebrating culture through food?

This means reveling in any number of helpings of yummy food until your appetite is satiated.

Consider the big picture perspective of nourishing your body, and honor physical, mental, and emotional wellness. You have the right to eat holiday cookies for breakfast if you want!

It also means honoring your body by listening to your fullness cues.

It’s possible that you don’t mind feeling uncomfortably full because you’ve savored good food, but sometimes that may get in the way of being present in the way you want to be. So, you also reserve the right to honor fullness by listening to yourself and saying “I’m good for now” on additional servings.

Bottom line, let’s practice giving ourself unconditional permission to enjoy this time and be compassionate with whatever feelings and body sensations come up!

✨And, if you want support understanding your neurodivergent brain, and challenging diet culture, check out my my monthly Eating with ADHD® membership program, Neurished! How often do you find yourself in this so me.. so ADHD dance?💃🏼

🧠 Our can make it feel extra difficult to find the light out of these seemingly endless cycles around food and eating. The frustration and shame can feel so real and so paralyzing! Ouch!

💛The plus side? There is NOTHING wrong with us and we are SO not alone in these patterns. We're doing the best we can with the tools and resources that we have! It's important to recognize our progress, and when we need a little extra support, we find systems, structures, and community to give us some extra hope and guidance.

Let's TRASH that "last-supper" mentality. Buh-bye!

This diet culture tactic can seriously ruin all holiday fun and make us feel crazy.

It’s tempting to skip meals throughout the day leading up to these endless and bountiful holiday events, bu, LISTEN UP, there is NO need to skip meals, even if you know you want to eat a lot of your favorite seasonal foods.

Your body still needs and deserves regular fuel throughout the day. Skipping meals can lead to
low blood sugar
mood shift
increased cravings
increased binging
AND
decreased awareness of hunger-fullness cues

--all of which are not very helpful to maintain peace with food when you’re walking into a room filled with food.

Reminding yourself that you have full permission to nourish your body and enjoy all of your favorite holiday foods will help your body trust that it does not have to take advantage of the “last supper”

Have you ever heard the phrase "fed is best"? It's used a lot when people talk about feeding infants. Well, I like to use it for adults too. Fed is best means the most important thing is not *what* you eat, it's *whether* you eat. 💜

When it comes to movement spaces, whether it’s a dance class, a yoga session, or a fitness studio, there’s a crucial element that’s often overlooked – body trust.
In a world where we’re constantly bombarded with images of what a “perfect” body looks like, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to feel comfortable in our own skin, especially in a public space. However, reconnecting in body trust is essential for not just our physical, but also our mental and emotional wellbeing.
