Rob became interested in yoga after going through fertility treatment himself as a perfect way to cope with whatever life threw at him. Rob’s philosophy with yoga is to inspire those that may not have considered doing yoga before to give it a try. "I’m 64 and my infertility still brings me to tears." 💬
Benjamin Zephaniah
1958 - 2023

Benjamin sadly passed away on 7th December 2023, he was an actor, poet, activist and brave pioneer in opening up the dialogue around male infertility 🗣️

Struggling with infertility himself, Benjamin spoke out about the male experience of infertility before so many - whilst the topic was still largely stigmatised and considered taboo.

We still have a way to go in improving conversations around infertility, but we are grateful for all Benjamin did to start the conversation and make men feel more comfortable to open up about their fertility struggles.

Research we conducted with Leeds Beckett University revealed that infertility in men results in feelings of isolation for many.

💭The comments in this post, which were provided by men we spoke to, are evidence of this, with some saying that infertility impacted their relationships and their sense of 'masculinity', as well as making them feel weak or like a failure.

Fertility is a topic that is predominantly associated with women, despite the fact that 50% of all fertility issues in heteros*xual couples are due to male fertility. The key to balancing fertility education and removing the stigma is to encourage men to have open conversations, let them know that there are spaces for them, and address the age-old expectation for men to be 'strong' and keep their emotions bottled up.

If you yourself or anyone you know is struggling with male infertility, please know that we are here to support you. Our HIMfertility support group is a safe space for men to gain peer support without fear of judgment. 🫶

There was a real lack of support for men experiencing male fertility issues, so the HIMfertility campaign was set up by comedian Rhod Gilbert, to encourage men to talk about fertility problems and signpost them and their partners to much-needed support.

'I started the HIMfertility campaign after my wife and I had issues trying to conceive. The experiences we had while exploring fertility issues showed me just how little support and understanding there is around male infertility. I wanted to encourage men to open up and talk about the issue and, most importantly, to get the right support.' Rhod Gilbert

Meetings at HiM fertility are informal, run by men, take place every month via Zoom, and you can join with the camera on or off.

Today is International Men's Day, the theme for 2023 is 'zero male su***de'.
In 2021, 4,704 men in England, Wales and Scotland took their own lives. With 2020 figures from Northern Ireland (160), this means nearly 5,000 men per year lose their lives this way. This is the equivalent of 13 per day.
Men make up 75% of all deaths by su***de and it is the biggest cause of male deaths under 50.

At Fertility Network UK we know that Infertility is not just a female issue - men account for around half of all infertility problems, with male infertility rates reportedly on the rise.
