Sallie's Fen Fibers LLC
A local fiber mini-mill in Barrington, NH specializing in processing your alpaca, wool and other fiber into custom made yarn, roving, and batts.
We also have a small shop with limited batch, artisan alpaca and alpaca-blend yarns.
It’s been a long time since any updates have been posted about the new mill building but wanted to share some exciting photos and give a little rundown of the progress! All of the siding, shingles and insulation installed. The electrical wiring, plumbing, and the HVAC system are in place. All of the drywall is done and the next steps are for plastering to begin, interior doors, and some interior finish work. Hoping the mill equipment will be here by the end of January. It’s been very exciting to watch the new building go up and the prospect of getting our customers’ fiber back in the mill is thrilling. The crew from Hadden Fine Carpentry LLC has been amazing and we are lucky to have them. It’s awesome to see the weekly progress. We will continue to post more updates as we get closer to finishing the new mill! Thank you all for the love and support you’ve shown throughout this process. -SFF
Thanks for all of the support for Sallie and the mill over the previous weeks. A few pictures of what happened last week. All of the debris and metal was removed, and the foundation and chimney pushed into the hole. This will eventually be where the new foundation and structure will be built.
Friends of Sallie’s Fen Fibers,
Sallie, my friend and boss, lost her home and the mill early Monday morning to a catastrophic fire. Everything was destroyed. Your support over the last few days has been amazing. A Go Fund Me has been set up to help her begin to get back on her feet. If you know Sallie and would like to donate the link is below. Thank you for continuing to come together and help support her.

To all of our customers,
There was a catastrophic fire at the mill early this morning. Everyone is safe but the mill was lost. I don’t have more details at the moment but will update as we know more. Please be patient as we begin to sort through this.

Processing some 70% wool, 30% tencel roving for a customer. This blend I am doing by hand on the carder. Sometimes we do a blend on the picker before the fiber gets to the carder.
Hey ho all you fiber animal keepers,
We are once again in shearing season! Very exciting times and all the thoughts about what your want to do with those beautiful fleeces are rolling through your head. I cannot remind you enough to start prepping your fleeces for processing as soon as they come off your animals. Skirt! Skirt! Skirt! It is the foundation of having the highest quality fiber that the particular fleece can achieve. Your end product will be no finer than the coarsest fiber present. So get rid of those belly, butt, leg, neck fibers; remove any f***s or veg ridden fiber in the blanket, as that will not come out during processing. I know it makes a lot of people nervous but it’s not difficult. Spend 10 minutes on a fleece and then move on (it also makes your mill operators much happier; we don’t want to skirt your fleeces and if you don’t we have to clean our equipment more often which takes a full day of full stop). We have some skirting videos posted on our webpage: salliesfenfibers.com so you can check those out for some guidance. Ask your fellow fiber friends for help too. They want you to be successful. Looking forward to getting your spring clips in!

Without spring fairs happening this is the perfect opportunity to get some fresh and exciting roving, yarn, skins and other great products. Come say hi to us and and !
Sometimes we get fiber that is either very coarse, or alternatively, very slippery like Suri, and very often black Huacaya. We have to put bags in the roving cans to reduce the distance the roving has to travel out of the can. This helps the roving stay as consistent as possible and not overstretch or fall apart before the predrafting on the draw frame. This is a Huacaya/Suri blend to be made into 2 ply DK yarn.
