The first lead role I got I had a panic attack the day before opening. The week after that I dove into my mind because I knew that singing was what I wanted to do, so why did I break down? Go figure, my nerves were shot from not taking care of my canvas in the right way. I learned so much about my mind and body and all the layers, I was soon singing on all kinds of stages and rocking out, with so much less stress and fear. I left relationships that were bad for me, I left jobs I was way done with. I grew.

Sometimes you need a hike to get the blood flowing, and sometimes you need a break in the middle of that hike. Sometimes you need to get yourself singing to keep your muscle coordination in your body, and sometimes you need to rest. For 5 min, for a day, only you can decide. But whatever feels like it’s gonna be good for you - so good you don’t wanna do it- that’s the thing you need to do. Re: my live yesterday about sitting in the muck. Know yourself, your patterns, and push yourself to be ok with uncomfortability, whatever that means to you. If practice or rest or making weird noises in your mix is the place that makes you cringe- that’s the thing.
Go do the thing. And take breaks damnit because we’re not hustling and grinding ourselves into the ground anymore. That’s a toxic patriarchal mindset to growth and we don’t need it. Love you.

Your dream deserves more attention than just an occasional warmup and freak out session once a week. I see you, judging and comparing your voice, singling out every pitchy note and worrying about how you will ever get on a stage again without sweating through both armpits and tightening up into a ball. I used to be a MUCH different person.
I was timid, only focused on making everyone around me happy- bosses, boyfriends, family, etc. I wanted to sing, but I didn't take many chances to do so. I didn't even join choir in high school- I was a band geek and I often hid behind my bass clarinet 😆. I wrote songs, but I hid behind my guitar, and only sang for a small group of people, only occasionally. ​

It wasn't until I finally realized that saying yes to more 'important' and 'realistic' choices were only leading me into resentment and frustration.

​I finally started to say yes to my dream of singing. But it wasn't until I was 25 and had finally gotten tired of working retail, not using my degree, which wasn't even in music, that I realized that I was just spinning my wheels doing everything BUT my biggest dream. I started taking voice lessons, and doing open mics, and auditioning for shows.
