Let's finally settle the debate!

Does brand really matter? Does generic taste different? Do I need to pay more for the "better" taste?

I think the answer varies from person to person, and item to item.

However, most big name brands are the same as the generic brand - but LABELED or PACKAGED as a different brand.

I'm challenging you to start looking at the manufacturer - not the "brand" when comparing 2 items of different prices.

Big box stores like Costco do this with most of their items! The Kirkland Coffee Beans are actually Starbucks beans, packaged for Kirkland. For half of the price.

What other brand name/generic dupes have you found that is helping you change your money story from Wanting to Wealthy?

A few days ago I talked about the importance of having 2 savings accounts for your kids.

Here is one of the reasons why I suggest this!

When my son and I are at the thrift shop or elsewhere, without a doubt, he will ask if he can buy something.

Generally, I'll use this as a teaching moment with him.

One of the easiest things to do is simply remind them of their piggy bank.

I often tell my son "lets go home and check if you have enough in your piggy bank first".

This teaches him to look at prices of things vs how much money he has, and it helps ensure he REALLY wants the item.

Are there things you tell your kids to help them make better financial choices?

Did you know that you can (usually) use the library services without having a library card?

That's right!

You don't have to be a card carrying member of your library, to go in and read the books there, participate in a children's story time, or learn from any number of educational opportunities that are hosted at libraries!

Now, if you want to bring books or materials home, then you need a library card (but that is generally free within their district).

Tell me in the comments your favorite free activity that doesn't require a membership and help you save money!

At my kiddo's current age, he has a pretty short memory of the things he has asked for.

I could buy him all of the things he wants but, it's not in HIS best interests.

He doesn't need everything he pleads for. He wants it because it's a shiny new object...that will probably sit in his toy box until I go in and clean out.

So, we tell him to add it to his wish list for Christmas or his birthday!

I've heard of other parents taking a picture of the item so their child can "see" the item, without having brought it home.

What are your thoughts on delaying the purchase of something, or adding it their wish lists?

Do your young kids have a piggy bank where they can collect loose change?

What about an actual savings account that you, partner, grandparents (ie - a trusted adult) manages?

My episode on preschoolers brings up the idea of having just that: a piggy bank for loose change my kiddo earns and finds, and a savings account that is for his future that his dad and I manage.

While he doesn't know about the savings account (yet), we do use his piggy bank money as "bank account" for him to spend on the things that he wants (more on that in the episode!).

How do you teach your kids about savings?

Macklemore might have made the thrift shop popular, but I've been thrift shopping for years and I love it!

My favorite part of the thrift shop, is that our families can give and receive there.

What I mean by this, is that we can help reuse items by donating things we don't use anymore to the thrift shop - where other people can buy at a discount, allowing them to stretch their dollars too.

Another great example of stretching your dollars, is utilizing the perks of memberships you have!

Did you know that your zoo membership can get you discounted admission to other attractions across the nation?

Believe it or not, you don't have to spend money to have fun with your kids - and they can even be part of the financial decision for what activity you participate in.

There are so many free activities for young kids to enjoy, you just have to know what to look for!

Places like the library, city parks, cultural centers, hikes, lakes, rivers and more are all (usually) free.

Sometimes we have to consider the cost of travel, such as gas when deciding if a "free" activitiy is worth it - or we bring our own lunches instead of purchasing food out.

Tons of places offer free admission for kids under x age (I've seen most often either under 4, or under 7) with paying adult, or even free for all youth under 18.

What is your favorite free activity to enjoy with your kids?

How many times have you gone to the store, kid(s) in tow, and the moment you step into the store, they begin asking for everything in sight.

""Momma, can I have this toy?""

Let's stop right there and set some expectations before getting into the store.

That's right - tell your kids exactly what the plan is before going inside: Are you going to be purchasing something for them? What stipulations exist? Does the price matter?

These are things that can help quell any last minute impulse buys and pressure as your shopping, which helps to keep your budget on track too!

If you haven't caught my most recent episode on Preschoolers, now's the time to go listen!

Now that my son is a preschooler, I needed to adjust how I was discussing money with him - and how he can learn to understand money even at his young age. I'm not suggesting you start to teach your preschooler about stocks and having a diversified portfolio, but preschoolers can still learn some basic money principles!

The Wanting to Wealthy podcast teaches people from all walks of life, and of all ages how to change their money story, and how to reach our children the importance of discussing money.

What age did you start learning about money?

Did you know, in the home buying and selling process - escrow is a neutral entity!

This means they don't take side, they don't work "for" one person vs another, or benefit from one side winning over another.

Because escrow is neutral, they are where all money flows through in Real Estate. They can ensure accurate accounting from all parties!

Have questions about the Real Estate industry? Here are some great resources Messy Bun Momma

If you've been listening for any amount of time, then you know I love asking my podcast guests what wealthy means to them - and I think Julie hit it on the head in a recent podcast episode when she said "wealthy changes over time, but it is the freedom to make the choices to do what I want with my time."

Wealthy can mean different things to each of us, and that's why I love helping my students on their journey from wanting to wealthy.

Check out the link in my bio for more information!
