Even as a registered dietitian, my first breastfeeding experience rocked my world.

“At least I’ll lose weight!”, I told myself.

Until I weighed more when she was 6 months old than I did the day she was born.

As it turns out, breastfeeding doesn’t always equal weight loss.

Have you ever wanted to try a ketogenic diet but…

1. Saw an immediate dip in your milk supply?
2. Couldn’t get past the unpleasant side effects of “Keto Flu”?

Then, like/save/share this post because I’m going to walk you through the importance of electrolytes!

(Disclaimer: While I am a registered dietitian, I am not YOUR dietitian. The info provided is not to be taken as medical advice, ok?)

When you cut carbs and start burning fat for energy, your body releases excess fluid (you start to p*e a lot 😜).

With that excess fluid comes electrolytes.

Ketosis = Fluid/Electrolyte Losses.

Fluids & electrolytes have to be replaced!

If you don’t, you’ll experience fatigue, leg cramps, constipation, headaches, irritability, and A DECREASE IN MILK SUPPLY. 🙅‍♀️

The best way to prevent these side effects is to replace fluids/electrolytes.

This is why I encourage my Keto Mamas to consume two salty drinks per day to replace sodium.

My favorites are:
1️⃣
2️⃣ Good ol’ fashioned bone broth (salted with 1/4-1/2 teaspoon salt)
3️⃣
4️⃣ electrolyte powder

I also encourage my Keto Mamas to salt their food so it tastes good.

How do you want to feel 3 months from now?

6 months?

A year?

February 11th, 2022, I found out I was pregnant.

It was my 41st birthday and it was a surprise (the positive test, not my birthday 😆).

I didn’t know what the future held but I knew how I wanted to feel…

Empowered. Strong. Connected to this little life.

I worked with a therapist, I worked out with my Peloton Mama group, I ate low carb (massively controlled my vomiting), and I meditated/prayed.

I had my dream photoshoot and every time I touched my belly, I was sending a message of love to the little life inside of me.

Empowered. Strong. Connected.

When I speak with moms like you, weight loss means so much more than physical appearance.

It means playing on the floor with your kids instead of watching from the couch.

Having more energy so you’re not drained & impatient with your partner.

Confidently stepping into photos so your children can have those precious memories forever.

Have you ever thought about how your mindset impacts your weight loss journey?

“I am so fat”

“I’ll never fit in these jeans again”

“I hate my body”

“I’ll wear a bathing suit when I lose 30 lbs”

Carl Jung said “Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will rule your life and you will call it fate.”

What he is saying is that there is a subconscious part of your mind that is controlling your actions and deciding your fate for you.

If your internal dialogue sounds like the mean girl in the above examples, it’s time to do some work, Mama!

1️⃣ Recognize the negative self talk

Don’t judge it, just notice it & write it down.

2️⃣ Flip the script.

Cross out “I’m so fat” and write “My body is incredible for growing a new life”

Instead of “I hate my body”, write “I am learning to love my body”.

Turn those self limiting beliefs into affirmations and love the hell out of yourself!

3️⃣ Practice gratitude every day

“I’m grateful for my strong legs that carry me & my baby”

“I’m grateful for my eyes that can see my baby’s first smile”

Or maybe “I’m grateful for my hump, my hump, my lovely lady lumps” 🤷🏼‍♀️

Happy National Daughter’s Day to my two favorite girls in the whole wide world. 🥰

I never imagined I would have two little ladies to push me to be better while also, slightly, driving me crazy. Pretty much sums up 🤷🏼‍♀️😂

While I wish I had my mom here to question and lean on for support, I know she had a hand in picking these two souls out and leaving them in my care.

Love these ladies with all my heart ❤️

You step on the scale and gasp. 😮

Wait a second… I was supposed to LOSE weight while breastfeeding. How can I be gaining?? 😩

The weight you planned on losing has been hanging on for dear life and no one prepared you for that possibility and it sucks. I hear you, Mama!

As it turns out, there is a lot going on in our bodies that can make weight loss particularly difficult while breastfeeding.

Poor sleep, stress, hormones… these can all create an environment where you are hungry, craving foods that are easy to overeat and, as an added bonus, your body has gotten really good at storing fat. Hooray 🤦🏼‍♀️

That isn’t to say that all is lost. You can begin to lose weight before your breastfeeding journey is over and you can do it without impacting your milk supply.

Keto while breastfeeding can be used to support your milk supply, stabilize your blood sugar, reduce cravings and help you gain energy.

I stepped on the scale this morning and my heart sunk.

After all, I am an expert in weight loss. And I’ve been following a ketogenic diet for 4+ years. I should know what I’m doing, right?

While all of the above is true, I’m also human. And I want to keep it real for y’all. Over the last couple of months, I’ve been less mindful of how I eat and the scale (and my clothes) have noticed.

I haven’t been as thoughtful about my food choices. The handfuls of nuts I grab to replace a meal have gotten bigger. I’ve gotten lazy with fat in the morning, which makes me hungry later in the day. I’ve been indulging a little too much in Rosé 🍷. While I keep my food choices “keto friendly”, I haven’t been very mindful of how I have been eating. 🙈

So, I had a moment of shame and disappointment but then I thought of what I would tell one of my keto mamas… and that is that we will all experience a time when we lose track of our goals. Life gets stressful, the baby is sick, our roof is leaking, our partner loses their job… Whatever it is, things happen that may derail us for a time but there is no shame in that. 🌈

It is a beautiful reminder to keep our goals in front of us so we don’t lose sight of what we are working towards. I choose keto so I can live a long, healthy life where I have energy to keep up with my girls and be the best version of myself that I can be. 💜

3 Tips For Easy Meal Prep:

1️⃣ Meal planning apps like or make it easy to keep track of your favorite Keto recipes! They will generate grocery lists that can even link up to your favorite online delivery service to make placing your next grocery order even easier!
2️⃣ Veggies can take some of the most prep work when it comes to washing, trimming, slicing, or dicing. Save yourself some time and let the stores do the prep work! Buy pre-sliced, pre-zoodled, frozen, or ready to use and you’ll be eating in no time!
3️⃣ This is the easiest meal prep that you can do... Freeze 1-2 servings from dinner each night in individual containers. When you’re running late, the baby is a stage 5 clinger, or you’re just too tired to cook, you already have homemade, frozen, keto dinners that just need to be reheated!

You can do this, Mama! You can lose weight, have the energy you need to keep up with your kiddos, and keep your milk supply!

Are you making these keto mistakes? 😳

My client, Heidi, came to me frustrated with her weight loss. She initially lost weight on her keto journey but then she stalled and didn’t understand why! 😖

When we started working together, I realized she had been using low carb junk foods that were hurting her weight loss. Just because it says “Keto” doesn’t mean you should eat it, Mama.

Ingredients matter and most of these “keto” friendly foods are full of cheap ingredients like soybean oil, hydrogenated vegetable oils and gluten. This increases inflammation, puts additional stress on your body, and can hurt your weight loss progress.

Once she cut out the low carb breads and tortillas, she lost 8 lbs in 2 weeks! 🤯

Can I get a 🥳 for not making different meals for everyone in your family?!

So many of the mamas I speak with are worried about how they will have time to make separate keto meals for themselves. And I tell them, you don’t have to!

By choosing one main entree and providing appropriate side dishes, everyone in your family can enjoy 1 meal together. Goodbye short order cooking!

Using the hamburger 🍔 example above, you could provide buns for your family and use a lettuce wrap for your burger.

Skip the fries and make sure there are a variety of veggies that everyone can enjoy on their burgers and eat on the side. Cucumbers, tomatoes, and sautéed mushrooms are our favorites!

Finally, make sure you have extra fat by adding avocado, an avocado oil mayo or by creating your own garlic aioli.

Long gone are the days of painfully p*eling your perfectly cooked hardboiled egg, cursing that yet another “easy p*el” recipe has failed. 😂

Even the toughest shell p*els away with this simple hack....

1️⃣Fill container with cold water & add your hardboiled egg.
2️⃣ Put a lid on it. Tightly.
3️⃣ Shake it. Real good.
4️⃣ Remove perfectly p*eled egg.
