Family heirlooms used to seem like an “old timey” concept to me. I’ve always thought heirlooms had to be old, dusty, and well-worn.But I’ve come to learn there is something beautiful in items passed down from one generation to another. It reminds us humans of simpler days, of slow living. It keeps alive the memories of those who used, cared for, or even made the items before us. This last summer, my grandma gave me a ceramic crock that had been her mother’s. I wonder at the recipes my great grandma fermented in that crock. I imagine my grandma as a young girl, sleeves rolled up and apron on, helping my great grandma stuff jars during canning season. I am so grateful she passed on that heirloom for me to use. This summer I will make something in that crock, and I’ll think of my great grandma and wonder, “did she ever think a great granddaughter would be carrying on this tradition?”This is a Bible cover I made for a family member. Leather makes an excellent heirloom, for when properly cared for, it can outlive generations. I marvel at the thought that one day years away, little hands will open this Bible cover and read the Good News just like his great grandpa did before him. Do you have a family heirloom? I would love to hear its story in the comments! #cowboychurch #cowboyprayer
