Yesterday, while engaging voters at the polls, a voter came out of her way to speak to me after casting her ballot.

I will never forget her words.

What has been the most AMAZING part of this journey is discovering who I am too, and what my Creator has called me to do. 🕯️

Humans are quick to put their expectations on you, but when you learn why you were created and what it truly means to live a life of service, everything not aligned with your purpose fades to black.

I am forever grateful for EVERYONE—supporters, mentors, volunteers, donors, and detractors—who helped shape the past two years of this campaign and our service journey. The lessons have been invaluable.

OCTOBER is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, also known as Intimate Partner Violence Awareness Month.

Although approximately 1 in 4 women and 1 in 9 men will experience in their lifetime, 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men will experience some form of intimate partner dating violence or domestic violence in their lifetime.

Domestic violence is the willful intimidation, physical assault, battery, sexual assault, and/or other abusive behavior as part of a systematic pattern of power and control perpetrated by one intimate partner against another.

It includes (but is not limited to) physical violence, sexual violence, threats, economic, and emotional/psychological abuse. The frequency and severity of the abuse varies dramatically. 💜

“Stripped-down” history isn’t truth. Are we THAT threatening of a people that you’re not only afraid of us as human beings, you’re even afraid of our history… so much so that you twist yourself into knots trying to hide it?!?

This is where divisiveness in our nation begins. Until we overcome the of our children with regard to full U.S. and world history, we will continue to repeat it and our divisions will continue to grow. 😔

I firmly believe in resolving conflict and issues at the lowest level possible. Although I initially expressed objections regarding unbecoming and unethical behavior directly to my opponent and to his supporters, I gradually escalated to the Chairs of both Prince William and Fairfax Democratic Committees.

Unfortunately, their unwillingness to effectively address the issues I raised to their attention led me to express them to the Chairwoman of the Democratic Party of Virginia (DPVA). After my complaint was completely ignored, I essentially conducted my own investigation and discussed my findings with fellow members of my district.

Although DPVA has the power to right the wrongs and harm done to our district through the violation of their own party rules by my opponent, their decision to not only look the other way but to deny this ability led us to elevate this matter to the courts.

Although we continue to face additional barriers, we recognize that the ultimate decider of power is We the People. Therefore, we encourage ALL citizens to become engaged voters and participants in their state and local government.

The fact that justice for our district has been sought at every level to no avail to date demonstrates the brokenness of our systems and why we must unite and educate ourselves to fix them.

Knowing the names of ALL your elected representatives, their areas of responsibility, and when they are up for reelection is the first step in becoming a more engaged participant in our democracy.

You can’t hold your representatives accountable without knowing who they are and what they do. 🗳️

When Karen Corbett Sanders—Mount Vernon District School Board Representative for Fairfax County Public Schools—chose not to seek reelection, she also decided to hand-pick a successor, Mateo Dunne.

When Dunne’s neighbors learned of his candidacy and the support he was receiving from Democratic elected officials, they began to plead with officials and members of the Fairfax County Democratic Committee (FCDC) to refrain from endorsing him.

Although a few elected officials quietly rescinded their endorsements, Dunne’s primary supporters—Corbett Sanders and Senator Scott Surovell—doubled down on their public support and wrote their concerned constituents off as “right-wing extremists.”

After learning of ongoing unethical and abusive behavior toward members of the actual Mount Vernon District Committee, I published a personal appeal to the members of FCDC urging them not to endorse Mateo (formerly known as Matthew) Dunne. From his culturally appropriated name change to his documented history of abuse, his track record completely disqualified him from representing members of our shared district.

Unfortunately, Corbett Sanders and Surovell took it personal and began a “whisper campaign” telling members of our community that I called Karen a “racist” and wasn’t prepared for elected office. They then took their retaliation a few steps further by endorsing my opponent and donating to his campaign for remaining silent and falling in line.

My posts on our committee’s page were deleted and our team was given erroneous meeting details in an effort to silence us, and Dunne received the endorsement of FCDC for Mount Vernon District School Board Representative.

Virginia’s Department of Elections is very specific about the date and time petition signatures and documents are to be submitted. Although everyone knew our team had our paperwork ready to submit well in advance, our opponents were given an additional 7 hours to collect signatures.

Even though we arrived 1st and our opponent barely arrived before the adjusted time, he was listed 1st on the qualification sheet and ultimately printed 1st on the ballot.

Multiple studies have found that candidates receive a larger share of votes when listed first on the ballot relative to being listed in any other position. One study found that candidates listed first win between four and five percent more than they might be expected to if they were listed later on the ballot. (See studies referenced in graphics.)

This adjustment was a violation of both Virginia’s Democratic Party policy as well as Virginia law.

The New 19th is Virginia’s 2nd most diverse House District with 32.2% Hispanic residents and 30.2% of residents identifying racially as White, 25.8% identifying as Black, 14% identifying as biracial/multi-racial, and 10.8% identifying as Asian.

To help unify our I partnered with fellow members of our community in my personal capacity, the Prince William County Republican Committee, and multiple Fairfax County Democratic Caucuses to co-create a bipartisan, bilingual 🗳️

Unfortunately, my opponent’s mother—who served as the Woodbridge Magisterial District Committee Chairwoman at the time—felt the event would strengthen my campaign. She harassed the Greek-letter organizations’ leaders and the owner of the hosting venue to have the voter registration drive canceled one month before the 2022 midterms.

During this time, my opponent continued to serve as Senior Vice Chair and the Chairwoman of the Prince William County Democratic Committee also served as Campaign Manager for a candidate for state Senate who had a Latina primary challenger. They collectively pressured the venue owner which led to the cancellation of the event. This resulted in the elimination of a community event and hundreds of potential newly registered Hispanic voters in the most diverse county in the Commonwealth.

I was today years old when I learned the first name of the man responsible for my biological father’s last name (my maiden name).

I was this week old when I learned that—in her childhood and throughout her teens—the only opportunity for Black people to make money in the rural part of the Mississippi Delta where my mother grew up was to pick cotton.

For those who don’t understand why Black History is so important, think of your personal family history and how knowing who and where you come from has personally impacted you.
