Very excited to have two more brilliant additions to events happening at Caracol. Booking info in bio.

1. The Power of Love & The Love of Power

What do the relationships between parent and child, therapist and patient, guru and disciple, adept and initiate, teacher and student, sub and dom, beloved and lover, despot and subject all have in common? and how do they differ? When does the presence of power become an abuse of power? and can it be undone? In this talk Timmy Davis will use psychoanalysis and philosophy to explore the place of power in life and transformation.

2. Think Out of the Tongue: A Creative Translation Worksop

Did you know that you can translate a text before you can speak the language? Or even better, that you can translate to learn that language?

In this workshop we will step aside the learn-then-translate model, and we will go straight into the fun. We will be translating a poem from another language to explore the creative pathways to language learning and prismatic reading. The aim of this workshop is to see how one single text can open up multiple possibilities to translation, and how this openness can be an exciting way of learning a new language.

Two brand new releases from now in stock.

- THEY WILL BEAT THE MEMORY OUT OF US

In the face of ecological crisis, police repression and white supremacy, there is an apparent lack of options for effective resistance. Here, Peter Gelderloos brings to life some of the conflictive and subversive events of the last couple of decades in a radical new criticism of nonviolence.

The book weaves history, vignettes, interviews and personal reflections to show how our movements suffer from an inability to pass on lessons learned from one generation to the next.

_________

- RED THREADS

The red flag: there is no symbol, perhaps other than the crucifix and the crescent moon, that so many people have lived and died for. A standard of hope and resistance to millions, and of terror and tyranny to many. But why is the red flag red? How did it come to represent the workers against the propertied class? And how did it travel the world?

From its martial beginnings in Rome and France, to the raising of a blood stained flag at the Merthyr Rising and the arrival of the red flag at the Paris Commune; from the jungles of north-eastern India to the factories of Cuba; Red Threads explores how this symbol of working class power first came to be held aloft in the hands of revolutionaries; who raises it today; and its meaning for the future.

📣 Our first event in the new space (woo!) - Weds 25th September. Save the date!

We'll be joined by author Adam Greenfield to hear him speak about his new book Lifehouse.

Start time and free booking info to be announced soon.
_______

In this book Adam Greenfield, author of Radical Technologies, recovers lessons from the Black Panther survival programs, the astonishingly effective Occupy Sandy disaster-relief effort and the solidarity networks of crisis-era Greece, as well as municipalist Spain and autonomous Rojava, to show how practices of mutual care and local power can help shelter us from a future that often feels like it has no place for us or the values we cherish.

You're in for a treat! Very excited that these titles from Rab-Rab Press arrived from Helsinki today.

THE SUGAR AND THE HUNGER

The first English language translation of Robert Linhart’s The Sugar and the Hunger, originally published in 1980 is an indispensable factographic inquiry into modern hunger.

Widely acclaimed for his engaged social analyses of proletariat and peasant struggles around the world, Linhart’s inquiry into the sugar regions of North-Eastern Brazil, juxtaposes heterogeneous traits of the impoverished workers’ stories into a vivid cinematic montage.

ULTRA RED: A JOURNAL OF MILITANT SOUND INQUIRY VOL 1

For their thirtieth anniversary, Ultra-red, the international sound art and popular education collective is releasing the first volume of ULTRA-RED: A Journal of Militant Sound Inquiry, investigating movement-based listening practices that take the forms of militant inquiry and political education.

In the words of Ultra-red, “No movement without listening!”
----

FREE JAZZ COMMUNISM

The fourth (silver) edition of Free Jazz Communism with the reprint of the entire script of Archie Shepp’s play The Communist (Junebug Graduates Tonight: A Jazz Allegory) is out!

Free Jazz Communism actualises the concert of Archie Shepp–Bill Dixon Quartet at the 8th World Festival of Youth and Students in Helsinki 1962.
Edited by Sezgin Boynik and Taneli Viitahuhta, the book contextualizes the politics of free jazz music in light of global decolonisation movements, anti-war activism, structures of racial capitalism, and forms of avant-garde music.
----

BIE BAO VOLUME 5

The bie bao series is dedicated to militant zaum investigations of Ilya Zdanevich - Iliazd (1894-1975). Zdanevich was a poet, designer, typographer, theoretician, and publisher who developed a new philosophy and methodology from zaum (trans-sense) experiments.
----

RAB-RAB ISSUE 5

The fifth issue of Rab-Rab: Journal of Political and Formal Inquiries in Art includes stories about nation traitors, fierce masses, socialist women struggles, love-forms, psychedelic counter-revolutionaries, workers unions, Brecht fiddlers, jazz surrealism, Soviet trains, and anti-fascism.
