Oh man this warmer weather makes me feel good and crave some salads. 🥗

Just made an interesting and delicious combo for lunch. The grilled corn and spring onions are sooo good. Of course lots of dill, feta n h**p seeds. Pan fried some chicken with garlic & onion salt and paprika as well, which tasted delish with the salad.

I’m super excited to announce I have opened my own clinic and I’m now taking bookings! I’m offering in person and telehealth consultations.

The Natural Medicine Collective is a little clinic room based in the leafy inner suburb of Kensington, Melbourne. I am building a team of similarly minded practitioners, and together we are creating a community-based space offering natural health solutions to our neighbourhood & surrounds.

We will be hosting drop in ‘ask a naturopath’ sessions and down the track neighbourhood education sessions.

Have you noticed any changes to your va**na?

Things like

• a different type of discharge, maybe thinner or a different colour like milky white, grey or green
• a strong or offensive odour
• a general feeling of discomfort or inflammation
• itchiness

You may have a condition called Bacterial Vaginosis or BV.

A healthy va**na is slightly acidic due to lactic acid produced by lactobacillus sp bacteria. This acidity is what keeps guard and defends from pathogenic bacteria. BV occurs when there is an overgrowth of pathogenic bacteria in your va**na, with Gardnerella va**nalis being the most common to cause BV, however others may also be indicated.

So, what do you do if you suspect you may have BV?

Visit your health practitioner who will order a va**nal swab to confirm the diagnosis. I use the va**nal microbiome test which gives a complete picture of the good and bad bacteria in your va**na. It also looks at any fungal infections, STI’s and overall pH.

To treat naturopathically, herbal antimicrobials are highly effective in killing off pathogenic bacteria. Specific va**nal probiotics and prebiotics will increase healthy va**nal lactobacilli bacteria colonies and increase lactic acid. This will ensure your natural defences are built back up. Diet also comes into play here, as opportunistic bacteria will feed off sugars and carbs.

It’s important that I mention that BV is nothing to feel ashamed of and has a number of causes. BV is relatively common, with over a third of people with a va**na experiencing this at least once in their lifetime. The sooner you treat BV the better, as if left untreated it can leave you more susceptible to picking up other infections including STI’s or cause issues during pregnancy.

Planting the seed 🌱

For those who have worked with a naturopath before, you will understand that part of the process of healing is changing mindset or habits. Many of which you have had for a long time.

My role as your naturopath is to educate you about the ideal path forward, and then work with you to achieve that goal. Change is often hard and takes persistence, and my job is to provide gentle encouragement and steer you back to the path when you stray.

An example might be: You have anxiety, are constantly tired, and have trouble winding down at night for sleep (a very common picture btw).

One suggestion I may have is to skip the coffee first thing in the morning and eat breakfast first. This may feel counter intuitive as the coffee ‘gives you energy’, helps you go to the bathroom, and staves off your hunger until you eat lunch.

I will explain to you how coffee on an empty stomach affects both excess cortisol and blood glucose dysregulation, and how when out of balance, both of these contribute to your symptoms and state of unbalance. So it totally makes sense, however, making the change is a different matter.

Some clients are able to easily make the change and have their coffee after brekkie. But for most, it is a difficult adjustment to make, and although the seed has been planted, it takes a while for the concept to become a priority. My role is to keep working with you to break down those barriers to health – one being mindset/habits – until an ideal scenario is put in place.

Something we’re good at when we’re young, however, unless we nurture that part of our brain, we tend to lose it as we get older.

Being creative broadens our perspectives, requiring open mindedness and flexibility. I think it helps us adapt to situations that aren’t ideal. It also opens up a whole world of beauty and simple pleasure just by being present in the moment. Our nervous system loves it too 🙏🏼

This sets us up for a beautiful, restorative sleep.

Sleep allows our bodies to heal & repair, to recharge, and to do all of the necessary things. Intentional Living - Food

Cooking becomes a mindful practice, creating a positive connection with the food that fuels us. Chopping, slicing, dicing, stirring, tasting. Organic and vibrant ingredients are the heart of every nourishing dish 🥗

Using nature’s pharmacy, turmeric, ginger, garlic and a multitude of herbs not only make our food taste delicious but also increase the nutritional value of our meals.

Balancing nutrients increases our wellbeing. Protein, healthy fats, and complex carbs provide an array of vitamins and minerals.

Embracing Intentional Living

It’s a weird period of time, these days between the end of a year and the beginning of a new one. I usually find myself going at a slower pace and taking the pressure off. Social & work obligations tend to go into overdrive in December. I find it essential to take a breather from this intensity, and refocus.

Over the next few days I’ll share some of the things I do during this time to reset, restore the nervous system, and move gently into the new year. Living with intention makes even simple tasks meaningful, and somehow grounds you again.
