Living the Yamas and Niyamas involves incorporating ethical and spiritual principles into your daily life. These principles are foundational in yoga philosophy and can guide you towards a more mindful and balanced existence. Here's a brief overview of each:

Yamas (Ethical Guidelines):

Ahimsa (Non-Violence): Practice compassion and non-violence towards all living beings, including yourself.

Satya (Truthfulness): Be truthful in your words, actions, and thoughts.

Asteya (Non-Stealing): Avoid stealing, both physically and emotionally, and respect others' belongings and boundaries.

Brahmacharya (Moderation): Exercise self-control and moderation in all aspects of life, including sensory pleasures.

Aparigraha (Non-Attachment): Let go of material desires and avoid possessiveness.

Niyamas (Personal Observances):

Saucha (Purity): Maintain cleanliness in your body and surroundings, fostering purity of mind and spirit.

Santosha (Contentment): Cultivate contentment and gratitude for what you have, rather than constantly seeking external fulfillment.

Tapas (Self-Discipline): Embrace self-discipline, perseverance, and determination in your practices.

“There’s a passage in Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda that relates an encounter he had with Anandamayi Ma. He asks her why she is always so filled with joy, and can enter states of bliss instantly. She explains to him that she’s aware of her true self. She knows that before she came to earth, she was the same. As a little girl, and later when she grew into a woman, still she was the same.⁣

And now, sitting in front of Yogananda, she remains the same. And even after death, she says, “though the dance of creation changes around me, I shall be the same.” This is self-realization, merging with that aspect within us that never changes. It’s becoming conscious of the self that is eternal while within this brief mortal existence. ⁣

Anandamayi Ma believed that the only true calling or purpose any of us have is to become realized. And so she believed that any action we take toward that goal is sacred.⁣

There’s a deep, calm, abiding joy that arrives when we can merge with the aspect of us that never changes. There is a bliss we get to experience every time we detach from the surface storms that cause chaos in our lives. If we can remember that we are the guru, that we are an aspect of the divine that remains the same no matter how much change surrounds us, then we get to arrive at a joy that lives at the core of our being.”⁣

I just finished the book The Physiology of Yoga by and . WOW WOW WOW what a great book on yoga!

As a licensed physical therapist assistant, certified personal trainer, board-certified health coach, and 500-hour RYT, I found this text to be an EXCELLENT refresher in physiology and yoga. I’ve taken A&P courses in the past but nothing specifically geared toward the physiology of yoga…until now. This book contained so much science-based information about how the body responds and adapts to yoga in each system of the body in a fun way.

This text should be required reading for all 200-hour yoga teacher trainings.

We are always in a state of transformation, whether we realize it or not. Understanding that change is a process helps us to mindfully notice where we are in the present moment.

Which stage of transformation are you in right now?

AWARENESS. am aware that something is not working and I need to make a change.

RESPONSIBILITY. I realize that I am the creator of my reality and only I can make the changes I seek.
The past cannot be changed, I am fully responsible for committing to my healing and growth moving forward.

FORGIVENESS. I release all shame and blame from my life. I understand that holding on to past hurts harms me more than them. I let go of what could have been been and choose my joy over pain. My heart is opening.

PEACE. I feel safe and at peace with myself and my decisions. I am committed to my growth and freedom.

JOY. I am fully present in this moment. I practice radical joy in all areas of my life.

WONDER. I am open and curious to each stage of changes as I move through them. I realize that growth is not always linear but I’m always striving to be better.
