My FAVOURITE thing… ever!
Removing calculus/tartar build up around the canines, so satisfying! You can see where the calculus has been causing some gingivitis around the canine, now removed, it should disappear in a couple days. ⭐️

Are those just overgrowths at the back!? 🦷
Nope! Those are extra teeth, (are actually called supernumary’s), and they can cause severe overgrowths if left untreated.
They usually don't have an opposing tooth to wear them down like the rest of the horse's teeth, so they can become quite problematic.
It's important to come up with a treatment plan that involves staged reductions to prevent any discomfort or future problems for the horse. Taking care of their dental health is crucial! 🐴
Both of these supernumary’s were found in the same mouth! 🦷 🦷 😎

It can be quite tricky to capture good photos of the mouth without blocking the light but we did it! 💡 🦷
This patient’s 109 molar has infundibular caries & 2 open pulps!

Caries (circled in green) develop when bacteria break down carbohydrates and release acidic by-products. This acid can damage the teeth and cause the destruction of both hard and soft tissue structures. You can still see food packed within the infundibulum.

The possible cause of the open pulps circled red (this is the “live” part of the tooth, made of blood supply, nervous tissue & connective tissue) is that the infundibular caries has corroded the hard tissues above the occlusal surface that we can see, starting from the infundibulum and reaching the pulp horns, not good!

What now!?

This case has been referred for X-Rays and further investigations. Some restorative treatment maybe performed to save the tooth if it hasn’t become too advanced, otherwise it may mean extraction! We can only know with x-rays.
If left, this may cause infection, likely fracture, be painful and will affect the equilibrium of the mouth due to avoiding to eat on the problematic tooth! Then a whole load of new issues!

How can I prevent caries!?
Unfortunately due to the issue being developmental, this is difficult! Reduction of high concentrate feeds and regular dental examinations will help.

Remember: Equine dentistry is BASIC welfare for ALL equines, and should be seen at least annually by a QUALIFIED EDT.

If you’re not sure, check out the BAEDT.com website for a list of qualified EDTs in your area.

🧚 🦷 Tooth fairy will visit tonight! 🦷 🧚
This lovely little pony suddenly started struggling to eat, quidding her hay and hardly eating her feed.
She had an urgent visit & one of her upper molars was hanging on just enough to stay put, but obviously causing some gyp!
You can see the pink fleshy bit left on the tooth, that’s all that was holding it in place!
Molar was easily removed and now one happy pony! ❤️

Please don’t forget your little companions!
Just because they’re not in work or not showing signs of dental pain, they still need to been seen annually! 🦷
Our little friends can naturally be very stoic to protect themselves in the herd, which can make it difficult for us to tell if there is any dental issues! (As much as I’d love to do giant horses all day due to being very tall myself, they still need doing!!) 😅
Prevention really is key when it comes to dentistry! 🔑 🦷 🐴 🫏
We even have Mini Gags especially for them ♥️

FINALLY got around to doing my own 2 this evening! Not only new shiny shoes today, but new shiny teefs too!
I like to do mine every 6 months. And because they are done regularly it prevents sharp points developing and keeps their mouths in tip top condition!

We have some baby teeth this evening! 🦷 🐴 🤎 These caps were very sharp and slightly loose, which would have been causing discomfort! So young Lula will be feeling much more comfortable now!
It’s a good idea to get your equines checked from the age of 2/2.5 years old to make sure they don’t have any retained caps and everything is hunky dory and off to a good start! 🦷
