Insights for gorilla trekking at @volcanoespark in #Rwanda with @visitrwanda_now

1. Proper gear. If you aren't staying at the hotel that provides what you forgot (gators, gloves, etc..) you need to get an itemized list prior and make sure you're good.

2. There are different levels. Please note even in the easiest level, I was challenged. In total, we trekked for about 3 hours.

3. You can spend up to an hour with the gorilla family you are assigned.

4. Your trek time is truly based on the gorillas, if the trackers are having an easy/ hard time finding them or not.

5. You will be taught sounds and behaviors of the gorillas, what they mean, and what to look out for. There are also circumstances where you may have to 'submit' to one meaning you don't make eye contact, and kneel so they know you aren't a threat. We had that happen towards the end of my trek, and that was precisely when I told our guide it was time to leave. Because...bruh.

6. Porters are like $10 each. Get one. They not only carry your backpack but also are additional man power where needed. They also carry machetes to cut through Bush. You can even order a number of them to bring a stretcher and carry you.

7. I was hosted, so I'm not sure about the price, but I've heard around $1500.

8. There are over 20 families. You're assigned a family to trek towards.

9. It's a 30 minute trek just to get to the edge of the forest, before you even enter to start heading towards your family.

10. Layers is the name of the game. You're in altitude, so weather changes quickly.

11. You're in altitude. That harder your trek, farther up you hike, less oxygen. Plan accordingly.

12. Bathroom is the bushes.

13. Have really good hiking boots because mud almost took mine off three times.

14. Do it! It's scary, invigorating, heart pumping, beautiful, and awe inspiring. I got emotional watching the babies and Mothers myself.

15. You are a guest in THEIR house. Remain that.
It is a gift

Have you ever been taken care of so well that it triggered your imposter syndrome? Just me? 🇷🇼 Pulling into @oorwanda to drums, dancers, and their impeccable staff waiting on my arrival...it didn't register fully that it was all for me. Truly. And in being honest, it was cumulative. The attention to detail, level of service, and care for me has been a through line of this entire journey with @visitrwanda_now . By the time we entered the Jurassic park like entrance to One & Only Gorilla Nest Rwanda, I had already been saturated in some of the most memorable levels of hospitality ever, through my 40 countries, and 20ish years of traveling. 🇷🇼 An awe inspiring compound, four course meals for every meal, a chef's garden that you experience with every bite, the Rose Fizz 😊, cultural welcomes, massages at the entrance upon returning from gorilla trekking, 24 hour everything you need, the rainforest aesthetic...I sat on the exterior of the Nest dining hall and assessed my decades of travel, coming to the conclusion: this is the most beautiful and inspiring place I have ever stayed in my life. Full stop. All I can say is, thank you. PS: That imposter syndrome moved on along, because yes, this was ALL for me and well deserved. 📹: @ganzaphilly 📷: @darcybuntu7 #visitrwanda #nomadnessinrwanda @nomadnesstribe
