Evaluate and observe each individual's dedication to the commitments set to achieve success, surgically removing those who do not rise to the commitments set and/or who do not avoid behaviour which limits possibilities. The Impossible Job Who would want to be a football Manager?

A massive amount of kudos must be bestowed on my wife Mary McAloon who truly has mastered the environments in which she chooses to practice. As a leader and athlete Mary strives to reach her full potential as Primary Headteacher at the British Vietnamese International School Ho Chi Minh City, guiding fellow educators and inspiring students to success every day, as well as dedicating herself to achieving supreme results as an amateur triathlete. In DaNang Mary completed the course in 5 hours 15 minutes, setting a cycle course personal best and finishing 4th in her age category and 22nd female overall. Such achievements are testament to Mary’s ability to manage a full time career and a full time training schedule to achieve amazing results.

Ohh and I did a little bit as well! 🚴🏊‍♀️🏃

If you have spent any extended period of time discussing professional practice or professional sport with me, then you will have probably heard me speak about 'the competency quadrant.' It dawned on me that I should take time to document my thoughts on how competency can be focused and help move the needle in high performance sport.

I would like to offer an alternative view on how competency should be explored using different definitions of familiar phrases and new imagery.

Importantly how do we personally navigate the competency quadrant to ensure we reach our full potential and subsequently, how do we guide others under our umbrella to achieve theirs? This is applicable in high performance sport as well as personal and professional practice.

There has been recent hot debate about the Vietnam Men's National Football Team and their pursuit to qualify for the World Cup 2026. Some disappointing results against Indonesia have raised questions about how best to achieve the goal of qualifying for the world cup 2026 or future editions of the competition.

I wrote this article in February 2023 and its content echoes loudly given the current situation.

As a professional football coach living in Vietnam I have in recent weeks witnessed the media discuss the 'cultural suitability' of the Head Coach leading the national team and as a result I have made an addition to the article from 2023. In summary, and I am happy to be corrected if I am wrong, the commentators and experts have portrayed as fact that the next Vietnam National team Head Coach must appreciate the football tapestry of Vietnam and as a result the National Team will perform to the expected level. I think all football fans would agree that it was expected that Vietnam could/should have achieved more favourable results in recent months, however there are underlying causes that led to these less than anticipated results.

Did Mr. Troussier set the national team up tactically differently than the team has been familiar with in the recent period of success in the AFF region? Yes he did.

Did the team struggle with the tactical nuances of the system? Yes they did.

Was/is a tactical shift necessary to achieve the ultimate goal of reaching a world cup? Yes it is.

Were star players sacrificed in the search of a bright new dawn? Yes, they were.

Who made the ultimate sacrifice? Mr. Troussier. Ideology was trumped by reality.

As a coach we must be pragmatic. We need to achieve results, but we must lay foundations for future success. Based solely on the evidence in this case, that balance was not achieved successfully and it has cost Mr. Troussier his position. For Vietnam to qualify for any future world cup it is essential that Vietnam football blends cultural awareness with modern football ideology. Vietnam has a strong football identity of resilient, athletic and technically sound players, the next step in Vietnam's football future is the maturation of tactical planning and ex*****on, coupled with strength, fitness, conditioning and recovery specifically focused on football performance.

In summary my concern with the phrase ‘culturally suitable’ is that football in Vietnam accepts the current football ecosystem as acceptable and enough to achieve the World Cup dream, I think it is necessary to adjust the phrase, ‘culturally suitable with an appetite for successful change.’ There is no doubt in my mind as a professional football coach that Vietnam has the footballers capable of qualifying for a world cup in the future. However despite great strides already having been made, the environment and football culture needs to catch up, meeting the potential of the players and the expectations of a nation.

Who is the best person to fill the role? A coach with the cultural compass, the mental fortitude, the tactical understanding, the communicative prowess and the dynamic leadership skills and personality to bring every stakeholder along for the journey.

I eagerly await the call.
