It is incredibly important for kids to feel heard and understood. Establishing healthy communication sets a foundation for a strong and loving relationship, and understanding your child’s communication styles is key! Here are some tips for establishing effective communication with your child:
Avoid lectures: Sometimes, you need to make sure that your child is listening and understanding what you’re saying in order to stay safe or drive home an idea. You might notice that your child checks out after a little while, which is developmentally appropriate for a growing brain. Lecturing your child doesn’t help you break through, so if you feel like the conversation isn’t productive, put it on hold and revisit it later, and make sure you’re organizing your thoughts succinctly.
Active Listening: Give your child your full attention, showing them through body language and eye contact that you’re interested in what they have to say. Ask thoughtful questions that demonstrate that you are invested in the conversation, and try to follow up later on or the following day to show that you remember what they said.
Make time to talk: Parenting can be busy and chaotic, so make sure you set aside some time each day to really connect with your child. Chatting on the way to a sports practice or music lesson, grabbing a meal together, or spending time unwinding at the end of the day can help your child feel heard and valued.

How do you know when behaviors are developmentally normal, or when you should be concerned for your child’s mental health? Children with depression, anxiety, or ADHD may exhibit a range of symptoms. Here’s what you can look out for:

Anxiety: sleep disturbance, excessive worry, conflict avoidance, GI issues, panic attacks, “worst-case scenario” thinking

Depression: prolonged depressed mood, guilt, social or interpersonal issues, trouble with decision-making, low self-esteem, changes in weight or appetite, thoughts of self-harm

ADHD: hyperactivity, trouble concentrating, impulse control, inattention, difficulties with organization, forgetfulness

Some symptoms can overlap, such as poor concentration or restlessness, and sometimes one condition may exacerbate another. Just 4 Kids specializes in pediatric mental health and can assess your child for any concerns you may have. Appointments are available daily!

Not sure where to go when your child is sick or injured? Primary Care is the best option for concerns that are chronic and non-life threatening, such as allergies, vaccinations, checkups, and developmental questions. Your Primary Care team knows your child, and can dig deeper to diagnose and treat them in a familiar setting.

Consider Urgent Care if you can’t see your primary physician within a day or two and if your child has any of the following:
Fever and cold symptoms that you suspect might be the flu
Ear infections with symptoms like pulling on ears, drainage, and earache
Infectious concerns like pink eye or strep throat
Gastrointestinal upset, like vomiting or diarrhea

Unlike other urgent care facilities, Just 4 Kids Urgent Care specializes in pediatrics, so we are able to provide age-appropriate care when you need it most. If you’re not sure which option is right for you, we are always available to talk or text to help you decide!

Kids experiencing anxiety can feel like they have a bully in their own brain, convincing them that bad things will happen, or conditioning them to avoid things that make them worry. Our Mental Health providers can help find solutions including coping skills and medication management, in an environment that feels safe and fun. Using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to equip them with the tools to manage anxiety, our therapists learn your child’s triggers and make a plan to address them. “Exposure therapy” or “exposure and response prevention” helps your child work through anxious feelings without allowing them to take control. In cases of severe or debilitating anxiety, medication may be prescribed. Call us to schedule an evaluation at (208) 534-7881

👶 Dealing with cradle cap? It's a common concern for many parents, but fret not!

Cradle cap, or infantile seborrheic dermatitis, is a harmless but common skin condition in newborns. It appears as thick, yellowish or brownish scales or crusts on a baby's scalp. While it might look alarming, rest assured it's not contagious or uncomfortable for your little one. The exact cause is unclear, but it's believed to be related to overactive oil glands.

Here are some tips to keep your little one's scalp healthy:
• Regular washing with a gentle baby shampoo. Mustela has a gentle baby shampoo specifically for cradle cap.
• Soft brushing to loosen and lift out the flakes. Frida Baby has a DermaFrida set that works great for this.
• Moisturizing with a good lotion can work wonders. Rub Tubby Todd All Over Ointment right on the hair and scalp and let it sit. Organic coconut oil also works great!

If you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to reach out to us at Just 4 Kids. We're here to support you on this parenting journey! 💙 💗

Potty Training!

There are many different types of potty training methods that you can choose from to potty train your child, and the right one will vary from family-to-family and even from kid-to-kid! No matter which method you choose, keeping the process positive going into potty training can make a big difference! 🚽

Some tips to help:
•Choose positive words! Avoid negative words that can cause embarrassment or shame like “gross” or “naughty.” Positive and kind words go a long way as motivators. “You just went p*e on the potty! Way to go!! I’m so proud of you!”

•Be a positive role model. Allow your toddler to see you use the toilet and wash your hands after. This can help normalize it for them.

•Watch for signs that your child is ready. Waiting until they are ready can make it a faster and more pleasant process.
Some things to look for is a child retreating to a corner to p**p, verbalizing that they went potty in their diaper (“Mommy, I p**ped!”), requesting a diaper change immediately after they have soiled the diaper, or even showing interest in the toilet.

•Make trips to the potty a part of your toddler’s routine. They thrive on familiarity and repetition. Once you’ve begun potty training, try to make sure you take them to the toilet at similar times each day to get them in the habit.

•Focus on the wins. Potty training can be exhausting for both parents and toddlers. Try your best to keep it a positive experience for your child and wait to vent about how tiring and hard it is when your child isn’t around to hear - such as talking with your spouse after your child is in bed!

No matter how you choose to go about potty training, keeping it a positive experience for your child can make all the difference! Don’t hesitate to talk to your child’s pediatrician with any questions or concerns.

Preventing the Flu

We can't avoid every illness for our children, but the good news is that there are things we can do to help avoid catching and spreading the flu (influenza).
The flu is a highly contagious respiratory illness caused by a virus and spreads easily.

Why focus on preventing the flu? Influenza can be more dangerous than the common cold is for children. It can lead to serious health conditions like pneumonia or bacterial infections. Each year many children are hospitalized from the flu.

Here are some preventive measures to take:

•Receive Flu Vaccine 💉
The flu vaccine is the best way to protect against getting the flu. Everyone age 6 months and older can receive a flu vaccine each year.
Immunizing children as well as adults who are around infants and children can help to prevent the flu.

•Fight Germs 🧼
Taking the time to wash hands and clean and disinfect surfaces goes a long way toward keeping germs away. As adults, we know to wash our hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing, sneezing or wiping noses. Children are still learning about proper hand washing, so parents and care providers can be sure to teach and help remind young children how and when to wash their hands.

•Nourish the Body 🍎🥦🍊
Feeding our children nutritious food and keeping them hydrated allows their bodies and immune systems to stay strong to better fight off illness. In addition to food, children can take a multivitamin to help fill any gaps in their diet. Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Zinc, Elderberry and Probiotics can be beneficial for boosting the immune system.

•Get Adequate Sleep 🛌
Sleep can be the best medicine! Ensuring our children stick to a routine that allows them to get enough sleep every night can help keep their bodies healthy and strong.

What is Influenza (Flu)?

Influenza (commonly called the flu) is a highly contagious respiratory illness caused by a virus affecting the nose, throat, and lungs. 🤒🤧

🚫Common misconception: The flu is commonly mistaken as “stomach flu”, but they are not the same. When someone says they have the stomach flu, they are actually sick with something called viral gastroenteritis- also referred to as a stomach virus or stomach bug. This is a virus affecting the gastrointestinal system and commonly causes nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Influenza instead affects the respiratory system, causing fever and chills, headache, cough, sore throat, runny nose, and muscle aches.

When you receive the flu vaccine during cold and flu season, you are protecting yourself from influenza, not the “stomach flu”. Did you know this difference?

Pink eye (conjunctivitis) is one of the most common eye infections in children. It may be caused by a bacteria or virus and is often very contagious. If it is caused by a virus, it is contagious as long as you have symptoms. If it is bacterial, it is contagious until about 24-48 hours after starting antibiotic treatment. It is an inflammation of the clear membrane that lines the eyelid and eyeball—the white part. It may affect one or both eyes. It may cause:
• Itchy or burning eyes
• Red or pink eyes
• Gritty feeling in the eyes
• Blurred vision
• Swelling of the eyelids
• Increased tearing
• Watery or thick yellow discharge from eyes
Pink eye may be prevented by following good hand hygiene and eye care practices. Treatment of pink eye depends on what caused it. It may include prescription antibiotic drops or ointment, artificial tears, eye rinses, or other medication. Though highly contagious, it is not a serious condition and usually resolves in 1-2 weeks.

Croup is a common childhood illness that causes swelling of the voice box and windpipe. It is usually caused by a virus like parainfluenza, RSV, or COVID-19. It leads to a barking cough, hoarse voice, and raspy breathing. It is more common in the fall and winter but can occur anytime of the year. It can be transmitted by respiratory droplets or contact with contaminated surfaces. It can usually be managed at home with the help of your doctor, but severe croup may require hospitalization.

Croup can be treated at home with cool air, steam, fluids, medication, and keeping your child calm. If your child looks sick, has trouble breathing, isn't speaking or drinking, or has noisy breathing even when they aren't agitated you should seek medical attention. They may receive a breathing treatment or steroids to help decrease the swelling in their throat, making it easier for them to breathe.

A hair tourniquet occurs when a hair gets wrapped around a finger, toe, or another appendage (particularly with little boys.) Sometimes that hair can become tight, restricting blood flow to that appendage.

As you can imagine, this can be very painful and even dangerous for the baby! So if your baby is really crying and seems to be in pain, it is a good idea to do a once over of all fingers, toes, and a quick check in the diaper area to make sure you don't have one of these going on!

It is also a great idea to make this part of your diaper changing routine. Use that moment to quickly look at your baby's hands, feet, and diaper area to make sure you don't see any stray hairs wrapped around something it shouldn't be before it can cause any discomfort!

Strep throat is going around!

Common strep throat symptoms:

+ Sore throat. This is the main complaint. Kids complain every time they swallow, and they often can't eat or drink well because their throat hurts so bad. When you look in there it might look red, swollen, and you may even see white patches of pus on the tonsils. It may also smell bad.

+ Fever. There is no magic number we look for, just look for fever. Anything greater than 100.4 qualifies.

+ Headache, stomach ache, nausea, vomiting, and even body aches.

+ Swollen, tender lymph nodes at the front of the neck.
When you feel the front of your child's neck and under their chin, you will feel lumps on both sides of their neck, and often your child will wince and complain that touching there hurts their throat.

+ Rash over the chest and belly can occur. This rash isn't usually bothersome, but it can spread pretty rapidly. This symptom isn’t as common.

Things that make providers think "not strep, probably a virus" are: mild sore throat with congestion, runny nose, and/or a cough. It is quite common that a viral cold will cause sore throat due to the mucus dripping down the back of the throat. The viral or post nasal drip sore throat generally improves as the day goes on or isn’t as persistent or intense.

Asking the right questions can make all the difference. What are some questions that you have found to work with your kids?

31/10/2023
25/10/2023

If you have a little one in diapers, chances are you're quite familiar with diaper rashes.
They can be caused from increased output of stool or urine, yeast infections, allergy from diaper material, irritation from stool during diarrhea, being in a dirty diaper for too long, trying new solid foods, taking antibiotics, and more. Their skin can be irritated even further from the friction of the diaper itself. No matter how careful you are, it's pretty much guaranteed that your child will experience a diaper rash at some point.

Some steps to help prevent, minimize and treat diaper rash:
✔️Wash your hands before and after every diaper change.
✔️Check diapers often and change them when wet and soiled.
✔️Use wipes without fragrance or alcohol or a clean soft washcloth with plain water.
✔️Pat the area clean rather than rubbing and let the area air dry when there is a rash present.
✔️At each diaper change, apply a generous amount of diaper rash cream to create a protective barrier on the skin and sp*ed up healing.
✔️During a bad rash, let your child go diaper free as long as possible. Airing out the diaper zone can help the skin to heal faster.
✔️Baking soda baths are also helpful during a bad diaper rash. Pour 1 cup of baking soda into the tub while filling with warm water. Have them play in the baking soda bath around 10 minutes. The baking soda helps to clean their buns and neutralize the acid from their stools and urine. Pat bottom dry.
✔️If diaper rashes are happening frequently, perhaps try changing the type of diapers or wipes you are using.
✔️If diaper rash isn't improving with treatment after 2-3 days, you may want to have your child seen to make sure it isn't a bacterial or yeast infection.

Diaper rashes can be uncomfortable for your littles, and stressful for you. These tips can help minimize the stress and discomfort that comes from dealing with those raw buns!
