Molluscum contagiosum is a very common viral skin infection that affects many children. It is passed by skin-to-skin contact or sometimes via objects. The lesions look like little skin-colored domes. The initial lesions are small, flat, and lighter colored, but as they mature they become more dome-shaped and raised. Fully mature lesions will sometimes have a little dimple in the middle. We diagnose this condition just by seeing it and no testing is needed. The spreading around your child’s body occurs because the little bumps will itch, and as your child itches them, the virus spreads around the body. They can be seen anywhere, but they are very common on the upper thighs, bottom, abdomen, and arms. What do we do about these pesky things? Well, not much actually! Molluscum is a benign skin condition, and it typically resolves on its own anywhere between 6 months and 3 years. Rarely, a case will last longer than that. Most cases resolve on their own without any scarring. There are times to consider treatment – if the lesions get infected (red, swollen, painful pustules), rapid spreading to the face or all over the body, etc. – but this is best discussed with your pediatrician if you’re concerned about your child’s case.Focus on keeping the skin well-hydrated with a good lotion or oil to help cut down on the itching your child may experience. It can feel helpless to have to wait for molluscum to resolve on its own. We would love to hear if you tried anything with your own children that helped clear their molluscum! Comment below! #molluscumcontagiosum #molluscum #PediatricTips

Ensuring your baby has a safe place to sleep is crucial! Please follow these AAP Safe Sleep Recommendations and share with anyone else who needs to know. • Place infants on their backs for sleep in their own sleep space with no other people. • Use a crib, bassinet or portable play yard with a firm, flat mattress and a fitted sheet. Avoid sleep on a couch or armchair or in a seating device, like a swing or car safety seat (except while riding in the car). • Keep loose blankets, pillows, stuffed toys, bumpers and other soft items out of the sleep space. #safesleep #babysafety #baby #parenting #parentingtips #newborn #newbornsleep #idahopediatrician #pediatrictips

Many factors impact your child’s ability to manage their emotions: Genetics, their natural temperament, the environment they grow up in, and outside factors like how tired or hungry they are. You play a critical role in your child’s emotional learning. Use these 6 strategies to teach them about emotions: 1. Start early! You can start talking about feelings when your children are still babies. Point out when book or movie characters feel sad, happy, angry, or lonely. Label your own feelings. 2. Connect with your child. Developing a secure and trusting relationship with your child starts with you being consistent and comforting. 3. Teach them when things are calm. Wait for when both of you are calm to talk about feelings and strategies for managing them. 4. Model good behavior. This is easier said than done! Do what you need to keep your cool, like taking a minute to breathe. Children learn by modeling what their parents are doing. 5. Punish less, praise more. You should aim for four or five positive interactions for each negative reprimand. Focus on praise and positive attention. 6. Be patient as they learn. Self-regulation is an advanced skill that takes a long time to develop. Children need lots of practice and grace. #mentalhealthmatters #emotionalhealth #parenthood #teenhealth #realparenthood #mentalhealth #managingemotions

Tips to help you and your littles stay healthy and happy this holiday season! #1. Decrease sugar intake – we know, heresy this time of year. However, studies have shown that too much sugar in the diet can lead to the immune system not functioning as well as it should! So set some limits on how much sugar your kiddos eat this season. Substitute some of the sugary candy with fresh fruits and berries instead! #2. Stay on a good multivitamin and probiotic throughout the season – most of us don’t eat a diet that is diverse enough to cover all of our vitamin needs. Keep your kids on a good multivitamin throughout the season. Look for a product that does not have sugar as the first or second ingredient and isn’t loaded with artificial dyes. Probiotics have been shown to decrease illness frequency and severity throughout the cough/cold/flu season. Giving your kids a probiotic 2-3 times per week should do the trick! #3. Sleep – sleep is crucial to maintaining a healthy and robust immune system. Most kiddos need to get between 9-11 hours of sleep per night. This is the season of gatherings and parties and fun times, but try to keep your kids on a schedule that is pretty close to their regular schedule so that their sleep doesn’t get shortchanged this season. #4. Keep core temp warm – bundle up out there! Important winter items: hats/beanies, scarf, coat, gloves. Keeping the core temperature warm by bundling up when outside will keep the body’s lymphatic and immune system active and optimized to fight off invaders. #5. Wash your hands – a LOT! With so many kids and people being sick, it’s always a good idea to wash with soap and water often. When you’re out and about, carry some sanitizer and use it frequently!

Introducing our hand washing song!🧼 Getting kids (and sometimes adults🙈) to remember to wash their hands for the correct length of time AND wash all the right places can be a challenge. Sing to the tune of Row, Row, Row Your Boat 🎶 This song will help your littles to remember all the spots to scrub and ensure they are washing up for long enough! And making those daily tasks we have to do many times a little more fun for them is always a win in our book! #handwashingtips #tipsforkids #just4kids #sickseason #germs #handwashing #nurseryrhymes #kidsongs

Things to know about ear infections👂: 1. Not all ear infections require antibiotics. Many are viral and just need time to clear. 2. Some infections will improve with antibiotics. Your provider will make this diagnosis after examining your child and prescribe an appropriate medication if needed. 3. Ear infections can hurt! You can keep your child comfortable with Tylenol or Motrin as needed. 4. A warm compress to the ear that hurts can also help with some of the discomfort 5. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! The congestion and ear pain can make it difficult for littles to keep drinking. Encourage fluids all day long. 6. Rest and sleep can really help your child feel better. Bluey marathon on the couch may be just the ticket! Ear infections are very common in young children, and we see them a lot in the winter months. If you’re concerned your child may have an ear infection, we are here to help! Follow our page for more educational tips! What ear infection remedies do you use for your littles?
