The Myth of Diagnosis - Dr. Mark Hyman Today I want to revisit a topic that is still very relevant. I believe that we put too much emphasis on naming diseases. Sure, the names we give disease are useful for finding the right medication, but they are not helpful for truly getting to the root cause or creating a healing response. As my ā€¦

Functional Medicine seeks out the root causes of illness so that we can address the underlying triggers that have thrown the patient off balance. In order to heal properly, the whole patient requires attention; that includes the emotions, thoughts, and spirit of a human beingā€”not just the physical body. I always say that getting healthy is a team sport, and unfortunately, many of us are lacking the positive encouragement and supportive relationships we need in order to move toward our best selves. We now know that feeling socially isolated can actually make you sick. And the quality of relationships a person has plays an important role in the concept of community, as even people who are married or in long-term relationships still report to feeling lonely when they donā€™t feel truly connected to the people in their circle. We are social beings and thrive with connection; we also literally become like the people with whom we surround ourselves. So if your friends are drinking green juice and doing yoga, youā€™re more likely to do the same. Remember, friend-power is more powerful than willpower, and that comes in the form of a supportive and aligned community.ā €

Trillions of bacteria and microorganisms live on your skin and in your body
In fact, there are likely more bacterial cells in your body than human cells.
It is estimated that in a 154-pound (70-kg) man, there are around 40 trillion bacterial cells and only 30 trillion human cells .
Most of these bacteria live in a part of your large intestine called the cecum.
There are hundreds of different types of bacteria in your intestines. While some may cause disease, most of them carry out essential tasks toĀ keep you healthyĀ .
For example, your gut bacteria produce certain vitamins, including vitamin K, and communicate with your immune system to help your body fight off infection
They also influence how you digest certain foods and produce chemicals that help make you feel full. Therefore, your gut bacteria may influence your Weight.
A number of different foods areĀ good for gut bacteria.
Whole grains:Ā Whole grainsĀ are grains that havenā€™t been refined. They're high in fiber, which is digested by healthy gut bacteria likeĀ BifidobacteriaĀ and may aid weight loss .
Fruits and vegetables:
Ā FruitsĀ and vegetables contain many different fibers that are good for gut bacteria. Eating an assortment of plant-based foods can improve gut bacteria diversity, which is linked to a healthy weight .
Nuts and seeds:Ā NutsĀ and seeds also contain lots of fiber and healthy fats, which help support the growth of healthy bacteria in the gut Polyphenol-rich foods:Ā These include dark chocolate, green tea and red wine. TheĀ polyphenolsĀ in these foods canā€™t be digested alone but are broken down by beneficial gut bacteria, promoting the growth of good bacteria.
Fermented foods:Ā
Fermented foods include organic yogurt, kombucha, kefir and sauerkraut. They contain beneficial bacteria like lactobacilli and can minimize other disease-causing bacteria in the intestines.
Probiotics:Ā ProbioticsĀ arenā€™t necessary all of the time, but they can help restore healthy gut bacteria after an illness or course of antibiotics and may even aid weight .

Are you looking for a Health Coach?
Health coaching, also referred to as wellness coaching, is a process that facilitates healthy, sustainable behavior change by challenging a client to listen to their inner wisdom, identify their values, and transform their goals into action.
Health coaches work with individuals to help them improve their health and then maintain a healthy lifestyle. This includes establishing dietary plans, safe exercise routines, and monitoring systems. The coachgenerally works one on one with clients and patients.

Shinrin-yoku is a term that meansĀ "taking in the forest atmosphere" or "forest bathing."Ā It was developed in Japan during the 1980s and has become a cornerstone of preventive health care and healing in Japanese medicine. Researchers primarily in Japan and South Korea have established a robust body of scientific literature on the health benefits of spending time under the canopy of a living forest. Now their research is helping to establish shinrin-yoku and forest therapy throughout the world.
The idea is simple: if a person simply visits a natural area and walks in a relaxed way there are calming, rejuvenating and restorative benefits to be achieved.
We have always known this intuitively. But in the past several decades there have been many scientific studies that are demonstrating theĀ mechanismsĀ behind the healing effects of simply being in wild and natural areas. (some of this research is availableĀ here). For example, many trees give off organic compounds that support our ā€œNKā€ (natural killer) cells that are part of our immune system's way of fighting cancer.

The scientifically-proven benefits of Shinrin-yoku include:
Boosted immune system functioning, with an increase in the count of the body's Natural Killer (NK) cells.
Reduced blood pressure
Reduced stress
Improved mood
Increased ability to focus, even in children with ADHD
Accelerated recovery from surgery or illness
Increased energy level
Improved sleep
Just as impressive are the results that we are experiencing as we make this part of our regular practice:
Deeper and clearer intuition
Increased flow of energy
Increased capacity to communicate with the land and its species
Increased flow of eros/life force
Deepening of friendshipsOverall increase in sense of happiness.
