Just a friendly reminder...When your child with diabetes comes home from school, you may be wanting to talk about diabetes.

Don't.

Ask them how their day was. Listen intently.

Later you can ask them about their diabetes care.

💙Remember that they are children first and children with diabetes second.

We often look at our A1c as a report card.
We can feel judged.
It is important to remember that your A1c is simply an average of your blood glucose levels over the past 2-3 months.
It is NOT a measure of your worth, how good you are, or how bad you are.
It is history. Learn from it and move forward.

Did you sing that?

As much as I hate to say it, here in North America, summer is winding down and many families are sending their children back to school.

If you have a child with diabetes, going back to school can be extra stressful.

Before school starts, try to arrange a meeting with staff members to ensure that everyone understands their role in your child's care and that a clear plan of communication is in place.

Diabetes awareness has changed a lot over the years.

When my son first started wearing a bracelet, it was a plain metal chain. Later he was able to get a nicer neoprene band.

Do you wear any jewelry to indicate that you are living with diabetes?

This can be a very hot topic.

Do you think diabetes should be considered a disability?

Some people strongly feel that it isn't, while others feel that it is.

My son feels that his pancreas is disabled. It does not work the same as a person who doesn't have type 1 diabetes. He therefore is fine with the label of "disabled". Despite being fine with being disabled, it is not a label that he feels restricts him in any way.

😎If you are experiencing summer right now, make sure to keep your insulin pump, glucometer, and your cellphone away from extreme temperatures. High heat will cause insulin to spoil and devices to shut down.

☃️If you are experiencing winter right now, you also must be careful with your insulin and devices. They also will not perform when it gets too cold!
