It was 16 years ago to the day that I found myself incarcerated for what would essentially be a third of my life. If you’ve never subjected yourself to such an experience, then there’s absolutely no way you could possibly understand what it does to someone’s mind, body, and soul. For better or quite often for much worse, that environment and experience leaves a mark so distinct that you could hardly relate to the person you were before it. The saying goes that “a picture is worth a thousand words” but what’s often not conceived of is how a picture is worth infinitely more whispers…
The voice of a million friends, foes, loved ones, poets, pundits, and critics harmonizing in the depths of our psyche, all clamoring for prominence in our life. The chaos of reality clashing with imagination producing such a violent upheaval of character that it could rip you apart at the seams. Our greatest strength and greatest weakness comes from the exact same place… Every single creature is a living conduit for the eternal power that animates the universe and its contingent upon us to reconcile that power with the cacophonous thundering roar of the million whispers that would just as soon devour us whole as deny our existence outright. To be seen or not to be seen is in itself an illusion, for its through your own eyes that your capacity to see yourself is fulfilled. So if you’re the type of mother fu**er that could take me or leave me, then you’re simply just a whimper, deadened by the raging sea of whispers locked in the pixels of a moment better left lost in the annals of history. You don’t know me, you’ve never known me, you’ll never know me, you’ll remain oblivious to the true nature of the universe and in such remain ignorant to the true nature of yourself. Life is an ever-evolving distillation process, refining the soul into spirit like the incalescence of lead into gold, regenerating what’s new from what’s old, failure favors the forlorn while fortune favors the bold. Crystallize the shattered self like the healing of broken bones and you’ll find that you’re most found when you’re most alone. Anyway, cheers to the journey ✌️

Traveled out of town to work with this little darling Lexi for a couple of weeks. She was the sweetest thing you can imagine, but considering that she’s only 4 months old and her human is 96, the potty training wasn’t going so well. With practice, consistency, and a solid schedule, we’re getting them on track.

Oakley is learning to trust humans, she’s sensitive, but super smart so learning obedience comes easy, but trusting and respecting humans requires us humans to slow down and calmly guide her through life. It’s not just about what we can make a dog do, it’s about what state of mind they’re in when they do it.

Talk about separation anxiety… Zero is struggling really hard with being away from mom, she can’t leave him alone at the vet or groomer or daycare without him having a full meltdown. His mom is literally in the other room of the house and he’s this stressed out by it. On top of separation anxiety, he’s also fairly reactive, having tried to bite me several time, hence the reason he’s wearing the muzzle. There is absolutely no way for Zero to overcome these issues until he learns how to surrender. You can’t correct this out of him, you can’t treat train it out of him, he must learn to accept the fact that his and his owners lives are not in danger and fight and flight are not acceptable options. It’s really tough to see so much tension and anxiety in this little guy, but it’s up to us to teach him what it means to be calm and let go, we have to show him how to trust us and perhaps more importantly, trust himself. You can see in the second video his mind grappling with the option of fight and surrender. He wants to let go so badly, but he is so used to feeling unsafe that it’s almost not possible. This is one of those instances in which time and patience are our best tools. As his owner learns to facilitate a calm-surrendered state of mind, their relationship will grow exponentially!!

So awesome catching up with .johnflores of and John was one of the handful of amazing trainers I learned from in the but he was also instrumental in helping me get hired over at The Zen Dog when I first got out of prison which was actually just over 3 years ago. We also presented the story of Pawsitive Change at the Apple store in the Carnegie Library in Washington DC with and in May of 2019. It was the experience of a lifetime.

I always tell my clients, one of the best things we can do for our dogs is teach them how to be calm. I can’t overstate this enough! When dogs are allowed to operate at a high energy level most of the time with all that adrenaline coursing through them, it almost always leads to anxiety and problem behaviors. Calmness should be the currency in your relationship with your dog. If you can achieve calm as a default the whole world will open up for you. 🐾
