Jack is a really sweet playful dog who can be a little hesitant around strangers, but when people give him the necessary time and space, he warms up quickly. Everyone who has stepped up to lead him on leash ended up building trust with him in a matter of minutes, he’s great with other dogs, walks well on leash and loves affection and play. He’d be a wonderful addition to nearly any family so long as potential adopters are patient and willing to provide adequate structure. Talk about separation anxiety… Zero is struggling really hard with being away from mom, she can’t leave him alone at the vet or groomer or daycare without him having a full meltdown. His mom is literally in the other room of the house and he’s this stressed out by it. On top of separation anxiety, he’s also fairly reactive, having tried to bite me several time, hence the reason he’s wearing the muzzle. There is absolutely no way for Zero to overcome these issues until he learns how to surrender. You can’t correct this out of him, you can’t treat train it out of him, he must learn to accept the fact that his and his owners lives are not in danger and fight and flight are not acceptable options. It’s really tough to see so much tension and anxiety in this little guy, but it’s up to us to teach him what it means to be calm and let go, we have to show him how to trust us and perhaps more importantly, trust himself. You can see in the second video his mind grappling with the option of fight and surrender. He wants to let go so badly, but he is so used to feeling unsafe that it’s almost not possible. This is one of those instances in which time and patience are our best tools. As his owner learns to facilitate a calm-surrendered state of mind, their relationship will grow exponentially!!

Just catching up with a couple of my fellow @pawsitivechangeprogram graduates. We’re talking about Gregory Gray’s business @dogscapers with @k9kommittee It’s interesting to see each other out in the world pursuing dreams and aspirations we could only imagine while in prison. Collectively the 3 of us spent close to or more than 50 years in prison. It’s crazy to think that we all could’ve been doing life. All of our efforts and accomplishments would never have come to pass. It’s great for us to be able to network and feed off each other’s positivity. Ralphie’s first session went great, he’s a sensitive boy and he’s only about 4 months old, so if his folks hadn’t have taken the initiative to start his education soon he might start to become overwhelmed and develop anxiety and/or other issues. It’s important to start off simple with basic tools and techniques to get an idea of who your dog is. The tools in and of themselves are essentially meaningless until your dog forms an association with them. This is an opportunity for you to facilitate the introduction of each tool so that your dog develops a positive, yet calm relationship to each one and also to the process of meeting something or someone new. The way your dog reacts to new things or situations will divulge a great deal of information about them, so it’s wise to slow things down, observe and assess. It’s also important to not worry about making mistakes, that’s part of the process. So long as you maintain a calm-confident attitude, you’ll have success. You can see that Ralphie is unsure throughout a lot of this video, but the happy-go-lucky energy of his humans allows him to overcome that uncertainty and go into the crate without any issues. Considering that it’s so early on in his life and his training, we’re just focusing on having him go in and out comfortably. We really want him to NOT feel trapped at first, this will set him up to ACCEPT being in there which is pivotal for crate conditioning. This crew is doing great!! When we in the #dogpsychology world talk about surrender, we’re talking about acceptance. In order for dogs to be crate conditioned, trained to walk on the treadmill or walk well on leash, or to have reactive dogs socialize, they have to surrender to - or ACCEPT - being in the crate with or without the door open, walking on the treadmill without panicking or fighting, not pulling or incessantly tracking scents on the leash when out walking, or simply sharing space with other dogs without reacting. Acceptance is the key to creating a calm confident association with the world around your dog and the many situations we put them in. This is especially important for dogs that are struggling with serious insecurity and anxiety. Helping them to be calm and accept the situation will build trust in your relationship.
